@underzen@mastodon.social - Adding this publicly. I've found several podcasts that discuss parenting from a Buddhist perspective. Here are some examples: Buddhist Solutions for Life's Problems: Being Buddhist Parents https://open.spotify.com/episode/51YNzWI0ygJDkTIY0Z6NOy Buddhist Parenting - 5 part series https://www.freebuddhistaudio.com/audio/details?num=OM780 Dharmabytes Podcast Tranquility and the Dharma Doors of Parenting https://soundcloud.com/freebuddhistaudio/tranquility-and-the-dharma

@underzen@mastodon.social - Lol, truth. I dived heavily into Secular Buddhism when I was starting down the path as I was very specifically not interested in "gods" or creators and worship, right? I've found though that trying to strip the Buddha's teachings away from the cultural and religious aspects often harms the process. There's some really thoughtful and insightful criticisms into how Secular Buddhism approaches or outright embraces colonialism, white supremacy, and similar concepts. Instead, I've found that following a tradition that immerses Buddhism into the religious aspects provides a more complete picture. Even if you just take the religious aspects metaphorically, there's a lot of value there. Any given culture adopts and adapts Buddhism to their needs, but we already see that in the US even from the "traditional" lineages. Heck, a criticism of Shin Buddhism is that it, too, embraces a metaphorical approach to Amida / Amitabha Buddha and doesn't see Amida as a fully literal supramundane being. Soooo... yeah. But Secular Buddhism's approach of "getting to the heart of Buddhism without religiosity" seems to "cut into the quick" of the nail so to speak and removes too much. And lol on the "karma of algorithms". That hits... yeah.

@underzen@mastodon.social - Yeah, I get that. A lot of the "algorithmically optimized" Buddhist podcasts that I've encountered are either from a monastic perspective (so no kids) or from a secular-buddhist perspective which strips so much of Buddhism away that it starts entering into the "McMindfulness Industry" of commodifying Buddhism to serve a corporate mission. They often focus on "self help" as a way of coping with struggles and systemic issues. You clarified that you weren't really interested in Buddhism resources for children specifically, but for those who are parents and have families, correct? Lion's Roar is a solid resource. Here are several articles on parenting from a Buddhist perspective: https://www.lionsroar.com/?s=parent as an example. I've found looking for keywords such as "lay practitioner" in general and even "householder" in specific tends to bring resources for folks living "normal" or nonmonastic lives, often with children and families. Lion's Roar has a series of podcasts as well: https://www.lionsroar.com/podcast/ Tricyle is another good resource, both as magazine and podcast. One of their podcasts is called "Life as it is" and tends to focus on applied Buddhism on every day life. They have a lot of articles discussing families and parenting as well. Example search: https://tricycle.org/searchpage/?q=parent The BCA has a lot of publications relating to the daily life of their members, many with families. BCA Newsletters: https://www.buddhistchurchesofamerica.org/wheel-of-dharma BCA National and Temple Podcasts: https://www.buddhistchurchesofamerica.org/podcasts My own temple, Ekoji Buddhist Temple, has two podcasts. One called Echo Ekoji that is about temple members and family. And another called Dharma Breeze which is more formal instruction on Buddhism but specifically tailored towards lay folks and folks with families: https://www.youtube.com/@ekojibuddhisttemple/podcasts So far as your theories about American Buddhists coming from beatniks and hippies, you are correct in that specific sphere. And much of the Buddhism that came from that area is now made popular. But family Buddhism and Buddhist sanghas that cater to families have been here long before the beatnik era. The BCA has roots from the late 1800's for example (both in Hawaii and on the West Coast of the US). There are similar sanghas in Canada as well, etc. But! While those sanghas and traditions are old and fairly widespread, they have not been picked up in the corporate culture of many mainstream media forms. Heck, many Buddhist centric publications have really only focused on Zen, Tibetan, and Theravadan traditions and haven't really focused on Pure Land or Mahayana traditions until fairly recently. Pure Land teachings and approaches often are preferred by many family and householder practitioners as they often are more approachable to those who are living life outside of monastic or individual-practice practices. (Edit to state clearly: many families in areas of the world that focus on Theravadan traditions absolutely live fully within those traditions. They have solid monk-to-householder relationships. We don't get that a lot in the US, so what comes over from the Theravadan traditions are generally the teachings that apply to the monks, not always how a family can implement or live within those teachings - again! Gross oversimplification but I wanted to touch upon it in a quick reply) Dr. Gleig's book "American Dharma" dives into the why. She also sites other works in that book which do similar studies and inquiries into the current state of Buddhism in the US. Anyhoo! All of that to say, that your expressed need of Buddhism as it relates to families and resources for that *do* exist. They just don't pop to the top of lists often for whatever reason. #Buddhism

I post up a lot of things that I do. That's nice. I'm going to post up a failure real quick. Nothing major. But still Trying to put up wallpaper in my room. Peel and stick. With a pattern. I'm so tired of millennial gray. I need aesthetics. Anyhow. I'm about to puke out of pain. With my body breaking down, doing this level of weird body postures has me hurting so much that my body juiced me with so much endorphins that I feel like I've taken a fistful of hydrocodone. Wooooo! I'm loopy! The wallpaper has turned out horrible. Pattern lines will not line up. Bubbles will not come out. I have read allllllll the pro tips and best practices and I tried to do them all (yes, even if the one's that you want to suggest and that others have suggested multiple times). But trying to do the thing doesnt mean it got done. So. I'm calling it. I'll pull down what mess I've put up. Clean up. Take the monetary hit. Will see if anyone in town does wallpaper installs. See how much they cost. And then save up over the next year 😅 Holy snap I'm in so much pain, hahahahaha! My body hates me. #DIY

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org - Oh gosh... I mean, the first time I did it all I had was a leatherman and some allen wrenches, lol.

Umm... the ideal kit I'm building out contains (will contain):

  • Portable folding bike stand
  • Set of allen wrenches/hex keys
  • Set of wrenches
  • flat head / philips head screwdrivers
  • Cable housing cutter
  • Cable wire cutter
  • Channelocks
  • CLP (not WD-40, WD-40 is terrible for bikes, it gathers a lot of gunk. I use CLP instead.)
  • Rags, Disposable Floor cover/pad for oil drips.

That covers pretty much everything I need.

If you have time or have partners, you might bring enough stuff to do bearings cleaning and greasing or other more complex stuff if you like.

@fullywoolly@mastodon.social - Yes! Right next to the seed library is a lot of books specifically around harvesting seeds and the library has entire sections of books on gardening. The library also puts on classes on how to grow. A local group focuses on outdoor growing and my group teaches classes on indoor gardening and farming. So far as what does #solarpunk mean, I wrote up a post on exactly that but cant find it. I'll write up a new one.

THEY DID IT AGAIN!!! My local library built out another seed library at a second branch!!! The first one has been such a success that they've begun to install seed libraries at other branches. This one is smaller but is well used (see the "check out" list) and can be grown easily by placing more holders on the wall. I like this approach. The main branch is using an old card catalogue. This branch is using wall holders. There's no right way to do it, just what works best for your area. Word from the librarians are that they're mostly self sustaining. Many folks check out seeds for free, plant/grow/harvest their plants, and let some of those plants go to seed as well - returning those seeds back to the library (or checking in their seeds). One seed turns into hundreds of seeds. The more this is used, the more it grows. #solarPunk #seedLibrary #foodSecurity #Libraries

Also, Rootable is open sourced so you can host it yourself without paying Rootable themselves. Olio is wonderful, very peer-to-peer. The simplest way to do it is to run a spread sheet and coordinate your volunteers that way locally, as you mention.

@birdwainer@infosec.exchange - I think you should start one up! 1) A good way to get word out? You mean like if you have it organized, how do you market it and let folks know? The first big thing is to try and do them on a regular basis and at a regular time. So that word of mouth picks up and if someone misses one they can go to the next one. Start off maybe once a month on the First Saturday (or Second Saturday, etc) so that folks have an easy thing to remember! Next just push it out via local social media and events page. Your town's subreddit. Local event facebook pages. The town's event calendar. My library has an event calendar and its advertised there. You can also go traditional and print out fliers and tag them up in all of the local coffee shops, cafes, and anywhere that allows locals to post up bulletins (old school proper literal bulletin boards). After that, it's a word of mouth game. Folks will tell folks will tell folks, etc. 2) Right now, folks have to bring in their own supplies. So I do repairs and installations but I don't have the materials. But people will bring in a break line and housing or break pads and not know how to install them. In the future, I might see about buying some basic stuff at bulk and either installing them free or at cost. Not sure though.

Had a Repair Cafe today! The local library hosts one every quarter. This was the second one and we had 50 people show up! We're hoping to start offering it more frequently, they're just ramping up. I was there for bike repair. I used to have a solid kit built out, but lost a lot of my tools in previous moves, so I'm building it out again. I had two bikes that came in today. I tuned rear derailleurs and break lines. Swapped out some break pads. Pumped up tires and did sole basic cleaning. I made a note to bring some CLP and rags for the next go around as cleaning off gunk solves a lot of problems. I was backup for laptop repairs and Linux installs (the local Linux Install Party showed up!) but focused mainly on bikes. I met some folks. One person from a local church group that is interested in maybe hosting a free fridge or otherwise volunteering with my food group and a person from the town's green initiative that is interested in personally working with my food group. There is a lot of overlap with various mutual aid groups. You get started with one and you end up learning about all the others! It was a good day. #solarPunk #solarPunkSunday #repairCafe #repairClinic

Noticed the abysmal indoor air quality as measured this morning by gadget we bought after last year's wildfire smoke turned the sky a Blade Runner orange for several days. Visibility outside is next to nil right now from all the wildfire smoke. So I dug out the box fan filter contraption I built last year. It's bulky as all get-out, but it brought the air quality to excellent throughout the house in about an hour. Last year instructions for building these things were all over the Internet. But really, all you need is a big square cheapo plastic box fan that you duct tape down on top of a cube of large HVAC filters. Total cost (depending on the thickness of the filters you opt for) should be ~$30-60. We used huge 4-inch thick HVAC filters, so the cost was a little more for ours. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXya56NIaVM

Ok! I'm going to touch grass. Today is my food rescue day. I'm going to do some work. Then head out, grab, and deliver the food and continue on. I'll post pics when I do. #solarPunk #foodRescue

@david@social.piconet.work - I dont even think he goes that deep. It's more of a flippant "fuck off and die, make your own thing then" than anything else.

@tomwsmf@mastodon.social - Haha, cheers 😂

Yeah, I don't know.

The possibilities for how to approach this (assuming we're against it) are:

  • Attempt to enact an outright ban on AI submissions or a strict codified policy and procedure around it by either convincing, pressuring, or circumventing Linux leadership
  • Go to an established OS and attempt to do the same (eg *BSD)
  • Create an entirely new project either from scratch or from forks
  • Accept it as is, gnash our teeth, die inside, and lose what we once had

None of those are especially simple, easy, or straightforward. And every single one has knock-on effects.

So.

I dunno.

@iris@neuromatch.social @avuko@infosec.exchange @anneoneam@mastodon.online - Yeah, Indeed! During in person conversations it can be used as an expression of mutual exasperation and agreement, right? In online conversations I see it often used as a "so what? what's new? who cares? you're stupid if you didnt already know this" from reply-guys. So I want to make sure I understand the intent behind the reply here.

@avuko@infosec.exchange @anneoneam@mastodon.online - It's absolutely fair to say "i told y'all so". In which case this is just further evidence. There have been lots if "he's been like this forever, and it doesn't look like he's changed. This is bad" Heck, I even mention all of that in my conclusion in the original post. But the response here seems to be designed as a conversation ender, not a response that is furthering the conversation (I may be absolutely wrong here which is why I asked for clarification).

@tomwsmf@mastodon.social - That's an interesting take on something that is absolutely no longer a personal project at all.

I imagine we could debate plenty of topics around the concepts of:

  • When a creator allows others to work on a project its no longer theirs alone
  • How FOSS is democratized
  • When a userbase and business use cases are so thoroughly saturated into the world that it affects so much of a person's life without their consent (think of what all Linux is used to run everything from key aspects of cars, to your TV, your phone, etc) that a person has human rights in regards to what controls their lives.

Heck, we can discuss "death of an author" here and everything.

So... no. You're silly.

@anneoneam@mastodon.online - This response is weird and I'm trying to understand it. What is the goal in your message? That because this is not new its not worthwhile to discuss? If a person just now started abusing kittens, that would be bad. But if this was the 20th time they've abused kittens, that makes it good? Or at least not notable? Wouldn't the fact that it's "not some new development" make this worse? Your response makes it seem like because he's always been bad we shouldnt talk about it anymore. It seems dismissive. So. I ask sincerely. What is your point?
