Look where this mindset has got us.
Thich Nath Hanh famously said, ‘the next Buddha will be the sangha’. That’s us, folks. What will support our survival is not some miraculous hero but people working together - with goodwill, respecting our differences & never expecting anyone to be perfect - to care for ourselves & others.
I like the idea of a nanasphere. The concept is loose, its manifestation is various & anyone can join. It’s not about knowing answers or being right. It’s about choosing kindness, doing what we can, where we are right now. Whatever that looks like.
Baby steps.

As an autistic person I can resonate (ie feel empathy) with most of this - except the no empathy bit. I know about being socially clueless. And how hyper sensitivity, to sensory input & to rejection, can make us feel that controlling our environments & resisting change is the only way to feel safe.
My neurodivergent peers understand this.
Among the autistic folx I know, most have heaps of empathy, & resonate intensely with the feelings of others. We meet - online or in person, as friends or as strangers - to communicate intensely with each other, listening deeply & offering recognition & care.
Most - not all - of my friends were raised as women.
Is there something here about how boys are raised? Boys are encouraged to feel they are entitled to shape the world & people around them to accommodate their needs, in ways women - except perhaps the most wealthy & privileged - are not. We see dominating behaviours valorised as ‘alpha’ & those who perform them accorded far more respect than they deserve.
Imagine if we all learned, as children, that we are not separate from each other - or from other living beings - & that one person’s suffering affects us all. Imagine if practices of care & compassion were valued more highly than those of domination. Imagine if our role models behaved in ways that respect all life.
I don’t believe autistic people have no empathy. I think we are misfits who feel unsafe. We struggle to make sense of the world around us, do our best to figure out what the rules are, then try to follow them in order to escape being targeted as ‘other’.
For too many boys and men, the rules they infer are toxic.
People are not our enemy.

I like the idea of framing rules & feeling rules when thinking about emotional labour. Both come from the work of American sociologist Arlie Hochschild.
Framing rules set out what is permissible to say. Feeling rules set out what is permissible to feel. Framing rules + feeling rules = ideology.
Sociologists have argued that unwritten rules about domestic work sit within an ideology of intensive mothering. A good mother is this. A bad mother is that.
When we feel upset about domestic labour we're breaking the feeling rules. When we name the division of labour as unjust we're breaking the framing rules. We're nagging. We're upsetting family harmony. It's our fault.
This is not an individual problem.

Sadly, this is old news.
Twenty years ago I completed a PhD thesis that unpacked & examined these aspects of domestic life.
By interviewing parents & kids separately, asking the same open ended questions - ‘what gets done, who does what, is it fair, & how do you think it should be?’, which I ran through 3 times, first for domestic tasks, then for the work of identifying what needs to be done & making sure it happens, then for noticing how everyone is feeling & keeping every happy in the process - then taking the family as my unit of analysis, I showed that men & kids were unaware of much of the physical & almost all of the intangible work women did in their homes. Boys & men thought everything was fine. Girls did not want to assume, as adults, the domestic servant role they saw their mothers placed in but had no strategies to achieve this beyond ‘I’ll just tell them’.
There was a hierarchy of work in these families in which men’s work & leisure time had highest priority, then kids’ schooling & leisure, then domestic work of all kinds. Womens paid work & leisure was lowest priority of all.
The families that lived without conflict were those in which the hierarchy of work was not disputed. Where women sought to disrupt the hierarchy there was conflict - which became another part of the domestic load she was expected to manage.
My findings showed that contrary to popular narratives of ‘progress’, this dynamic was not likely to change until men as well as women recognise the dynamic & choose to shift it.
This argument was not popular.
Twenty years later, here we are.
I wish I had been wrong.

We chose the cage option. Cats & fruit trees inside in one section, birds, possums & more fruit trees & veg outside in the rest. For us it’s a win win.

The response from Australia’s ‘anti semitism envoy’? Crickets. 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗
Reporting from our teamsport politics obsessed mainstream media? Articles in the Guardian & the Saturday Paper, now this in the ABC. From the Murdoch / Costello outlets of the far right? More crickets. 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗
So, when does our government appointed Antisemitism envoy oppose antisemitism? When those who advocated for the appointment can use the publicity as a strategy to demonise muslims & criminalise opposition to genocide. When does the envoy ignore it? When it serves the interests of the far right.
Talking points from that conference will frame the next round of astroturfing funded those interests to divide our communities & cultivate hate.
To be clear: holocaust denial is seen as antisemitism & terrible unless it’s spoken by influencers on the extreme Right in the interests of whipping up a moral panic about immigration policies that welcome people who are not white patriarchal supremacists like us.
We see you.

In my experience when you enter a private provider space you are likely to be recommended for every test & intervention under the sun. When you go through the public system you get everything you need & no more. If I had a serious health problem I’d go public every time.
Sadly in healthcare as in education, successive Australian governments have entrenched a two tier system where those who can pay are sold luxury & taxpayer funded universal services are starved of funds, stigmatised, & represented as being intended for use by only the poor. (Note that private schools & hospitals are taxpayer funded also, but as with ‘self funded retirees’ the support provided by taxpayers is glossed over or rendered invisible. The myth is that only bludgers need state support.)
We have moved from valuing the common good, to stratification based on wealth.
I have watched this happening over decades. How do we turn back?

Once again she makes me proud.
"In the space of two weeks, I've been called 'unworthy' by a former Prime Minister and continuing supporter of rapist George Pell; 'absolutely outrageous' by the Israeli Defence Minister; and 'difficult' by our current Prime Minister.
"If I'm simultaneously under the skin of a paedophile defender; a representative of a state accused of genocide; and a national leader aligned with said state, I must be doing something right."

Scammers accessed Age pensioner Ian Williams’ debit card details & withdrew $1,338, which is 5.5% of his annual income. He provided proof to his bank (NAB) but they did not accept responsibility or refund his money.
So he sued the bank - on his own, without legal representation - for 5.5% of their annual profit. That’s $379,005,000.
The bank did not respond to the case. He won.
On appeal to the Supreme Court the case was dismissed on technicalities & Mr Williams ordered to pay the bank’s legal costs.
Only after the story was widely publicised did the bank do what they should have done from the start: refund Mr Williams’ $1,338 & offer him an apology. They also waived their claim to costs.
Dragged kicking & screaming to basic ethical business practice. It’s a good look, NAB. We see you.
