Today in Labor History August 4, 1974: The fascist terrorist organization, Ordine Nero, set off a bomb on the Italicus Express train at San Benedetto Val di Sambro, Italy, killing 12 people and wounding 22. This happened at #BarnardCollege. Probably no accident that Barnard is affiliated with #Columbia. The Trump admin is demanding a list of Jewish faculty, staff, and students at #UPenn. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/13/upenn-trump-jews-list Trump's #EEOC asked for the list last July. Penn refused, and the EEOC sued the university in November. What's new is that several groups just filed a motion in federal court to intervene in the lawsuit on the side of the university -- the American Association of University Professors (#AAUP, national and UPenn chapters), the American Academy of Jewish Research, the UPenn Jewish Law Students Association, the UPenn Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty. From #StevenWeitzman, UPenn prof of religious studies and past member of its antisemitism taskforce: “Part of what sets off alarm bells for people like me is a history of people using Jewish lists against Jews. Today in Labor History July 26, 1937: Photojournalist and antifascist Gerda Taro was killed while covering the Spanish Civil War. She was 26. Thousands attended her funeral. Taro was a German Jew, who had to flee Germany after being imprisoned for her anti-Nazi activism. While living in exile, in France, she met another Jewish exile and photojournalist, Endre Ernő Friedmann. Together they published their work under the pseudonym Robert Capa. Scholar Hanno Hardt described their work as such: "Taro and Capa helped invent the genre of modern war photography while fueling the vicarious experience of the spectator by offering an approximation of life in the conflict zone." After Taro’s death, Friedmann would retain the name Robert Capa and go on to become recognized as one of the greatest photojournalists ever. In 1947, he cofounded the Magnum photojournalism cooperative, which included other great photographers, like Maria Eisner, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and William and Rita Vandivert. Madrid and Paris both named streets for Taro, Calle Gerda Taro and Rue Gerda Taro, respectively. "Magical thinking", as a term and a concept, exists because #magic is seen as forbidden. If magic were an accepted discipline in human society it would become formalized and tamed by the need for a collective set of ethics, as well as the necessity of interacting smoothly with the rest of society. But because mainstream Christianity has become terminally obsessed with mere secular dominion and absolute control over humanity, "Western" society regards magic as superlatively sinful and that attitude carries over into irreligious fields like science. Bigotry, most especially #antisemitism, plays a key role. One of the worst general slanders against Judaism is that Jews are doing evil magicks, am accusation that has been terribly inflamed by European occultists who feel at liberty to steal things from Jewish mystics. More than 40 civil society groups across #Australia are calling on #universities to protect the #right to #peaceful #protest and #academic #freedom on #campuses as vice-chancellors appear at the royal commission into #antisemitism. The statement, signed by organisations including the #HumanRightsLawCentre (HRLC), #AmnestyInternational Australia and the #AustralianDemocracyNetwork, expressed “grave #concern at the increasing adoption by universities across Australia of measures that #restrict protest and related student and staff #political #speech”. A senior lawyer at the HRLC, #ReginaFeatherstone, said various anti-protest policies have had a “chilling effect on protest and #dissent on #campus”.
