NEW: More Than 770,000 Children Are No Longer Receiving SNAP Benefits After Trump Changes Federal Food Program Republican backers of Trump’s signature domestic policy bill repeatedly claimed that revisions to the food benefits program wouldn’t affect the most vulnerable. But reports from a dozen states show children are losing access. https://www.propublica.org/article/snap-benefits-children-food-stamps?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mastodon-post #News #Trump #Food #SNAP #Children #Kids #Poverty #USPolitics

Feed: All Latest | Why Does Wikipedia Think I’m Evan Spiegel? by Maxwell Zeff AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Maxwell “Max” Zeff, a young tech reporter, spent a week mistakenly featured as Snap CEO Evan Spiegel on Wikipedia after a user replaced Spiegel’s photo with a picture of Zeff taken at a TechCrunch conference. The change, made by the editor “Artem G,” persisted despite being reverted, prompting Zeff to investigate the edits, examine the contributor’s history, and even contact both the mysterious editor and Spiegel’s communications team. Zeff discovered that Artem G had a pattern of frequent Wikipedia edits, denied involvement when Zeff reached out, and ultimately learned that Spiegel himself was unaware of the mix‑up but was amused by the incident. The episode highlighted how a single rogue edit can temporarily rewrite a public figure’s online image. Observer | Mark Zuckerberg Signals Leaner Future While Meta Doubles Down on A.I. Spending by Alexandra Tremayne-Pengelly AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a forthcoming 10 percent workforce reduction—about 8,000 jobs—while the company redirects spending toward artificial‑intelligence initiatives. In the first‑quarter earnings call he said smaller, faster teams can achieve in a week what once required dozens of months, and that Meta will “streamline our teams” as it pursues artificial general intelligence. Meta raised its 2026 capital‑expenditure outlook to $125‑$145 billion to fund its Meta Superintelligence Labs and aggressive AI‑talent hiring, driving a 35 percent jump in quarterly expenses. Despite beating revenue expectations—$56.3 billion, up 33 percent year over year—shares fell as daily‑active‑user growth missed forecasts. The cuts mirror a broader tech‑industry shift, with companies such as Block, Snap and Microsoft also trimming staff to prioritize AI‑driven efficiencies. Opinion Voices | Contributor: The inequality gap we should be talking about: marriage by Veronique de Rugy AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. The article argues that the “marriage gap” – the declining stability of two‑parent families – is the most consequential but overlooked inequality in the United States, profoundly affecting children’s education, earnings and social mobility. Research cited from the American Enterprise Institute shows that in the mid‑20th century only 5 % of children were born out of wedlock, compared with 40 % today, and that U.S. children are far more likely than those in other nations to live with a single parent. Millennials raised in intact families are far more likely to graduate college (40 % vs. 17 %) and attain middle‑class incomes (77 % vs. 57 %) than those from non‑intact homes, and they face lower incarceration risks. The decline in marriage has been steepest among the least‑educated, with marriage rates falling about 46 percentage points for low‑educated women versus 17 points for the highly educated. The piece also highlights that federal welfare programs effectively penalize marriage – for example, a couple each earning $30,000 loses roughly $5,000 in Earned Income Tax Credit and faces phase‑outs of Medicaid, housing vouchers and SNAP when they marry – discouraging family formation and reinforcing single‑parent disadvantage. The author concludes that removing these marriage penalties, or redesigning the safety net, may be essential to improving economic mobility and reducing inequality. 🐧 Ubuntu Looks Toward More Snap-Based Devpacks Moving Forward 「 Ubuntu Devpacks have come about over the past year as Snaps that bundle framework-specific tools with curated defaults all into a convenient stack built around Ubuntu's Snap format. Ubuntu Devpacks began for Java/Spring, .NET, Golang, and more while moving ahead Canonical is looking at expanding the scope. 」 https://www.phoronix.com/news/Ubuntu-More-Devpacks-Future #snap #snaps #ubuntu #opensource

The documents provide smoking-gun evidence that Meta, Google, Snap, and TikTok all purposefully designed their social media products to addict children and teens with no regard for known harms to their wellbeing, and how that mass youth addiction was core to the companies’ business models. The documents contain internal discussions among company employees, presentations from internal meetings, expert testimony, and evidence of Big Tech coordination with tech-funded groups, including the National Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), in attempts to control the narrative in response to concerned parents. “These unsealed documents prove Big Tech has been gaslighting and lying to the public for years https://techoversight.org/2026/01/25/top-report-mdl-jan-25/ #BigTech #GAFAM #Google #Meta #TikTok #Snap #teens #mentalhealth #privacy #surveillance #addiction #drugs
