just throwing my 2 cents into the #vpn choices and based on what i've looked at in the last few days. (yes i'm moving away from #mullvad not in a cutting off my nose to spite my face sort of way) i've looked at the following and i've decided not to go with : #ivpn, #windscribe i also avoided #kagi (incidentally also partnered with ws with discounts) which has AI , based in US and a paid model that I suspect I'll still be the product even though I paid. Either way, i've tested the free search and I don't find it life changing great. the ones that made the 'okay' list was : #njalla, #xeovo, #riseup, #airvpn i wasn't able to find (easily) a list of server locations with #njalla, njalla, riseup and xeovo needed some sort of tech knowledge to get started, and its not ideal as i needed to get this for the household and mobiles. only airvpn was one of the remaining that may had dubious twitter past. but it was the only choice left that had the server location i needed, so this was where i eventually land. mind, airvpn requires you to register with an account, so if you are worried about this, it's not for you. i don't use them for anonymity. tbh, if xeovo had locations and native app setup, i will jump on it. right now it just felt like a compromise. some references: https://www.kuketz-blog.de/empfehlenswerte-vpn-alternativen-zu-mullvad-und-proton/ https://nitter.net/windscribecom/status/1991234536626106606 https://mastodon.social/@xeovo/116852507230389517

Took me an embarrassingly long time to start using/paying for Kagi, but now that I’m here it’s sooooo nice not seeing Google shit jammed into every corner of a simple search results page. #kagi #googlesucks

Learned about Uruky last week and I’ve been trying it out. Seems like a bit worse than Kagi but it’s nice not having LLMs in it and being European-based. #SearchEngines #Privacy #Kagi #Uruky

@papawilf@hcommons.social @kagihq@mastodon.social lately, my #duckduckgo search results contain many stupid AI generated websites. They magically seem to answer my question, but they're of course vague and mediocre. Is it everywhere or do you see that less with #kagi ? Any "filter AI results"?

@kagihq@mastodon.social I haven't cancelled, but I've got to admit that I came close when I realized that you were sending every search ending in a question mark straight to Google. Now I just avoid using your AI features as the main reason I started subscribing was to get decent search without being surveilled by the likes of Google. I'll admit though, that the first competitor to come along providing even a vaguely similar service without Google / Yandex involved will immediately take my current Kagi subscription. So much of what you do is so promising, and then you undermine it by sharing data with the exact companies we're trying to get away from. Yes it may be more anonymous, but I'm still training Google against my wishes. #Kagi #Google #Alphabet #AI #GenAI #Privacy #Surveillance
