How many storms did it survive? How many birds found shelter in its branches? How many forests began from its seeds? An old tree is a lifetime of giving. Let's be the generation that protects, not destroys, our natural heritage. #trees #biodiversity #environment #NaturePhotography #forestry #nature #Climate #ClimateChange #photography #fediverse #linux #mastodon #afforestation #Monsterdon #world #deforestation #wildlife #ClimateCrisis #ClimateDiary #climateemergency https://gofund.me/8da0ff4a0

The EU's adaptation framework offers an illusion of preparation. Laying out plans for a 3°C drift average does not make it survivable. But it makes it seem so. 🧵 Europe is not even preparing for what happened recently! In the pine plantations west of Bordeaux, firefighters met the first pyrocumulonimbus France has ever seen. There was the largest firefighting mobilisation in EU history, and the destruction broke records anyway: https://civil-protection-humanitarian-aid.ec.europa.eu/news-stories/news/eu-deploys-largest-ever-wildfire-response-2026-summer-2026-06-02_en #climatePolicy #adaptation #megafires #wildfires #plantations #forestry #climateDrift #climateChange #firefighting #firefighters #France #EUPol #policy

New Study Finds Clear Cut Logging Can Dramatically Increase Flood Risk -- https://theconversation.com/new-study-finds-clear-cut-logging-can-dramatically-increase-flood-risk-284825 <-- shared technical media article -- https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2026.123895 <-- shared paper -- H/T @Daniel@techhub.social Pierce | Ramshackle Pictures “Here is a clear and simple breakdown of some of the latest bombshell findings out of the UBC Hydrology Lab… using a probabilistic framework, known as attribution science in the climate world. [The researchers] studied two watersheds in BC's Okanagan Valley near Summerland. In this area, they found that climate change was actually making the frequency of floods go down, but forest harvesting counteracted the effects of climate change and increased the flood risk by 10-fold (!!!) turning a 20-year flood into a flood that occurs every two years. [The H/T] truly want to know how the BC government and timber industry are responding to this new science internally. They're absolutely silent on it in public as they continue business as usual…” #Nonstationary #Probabilisticphysics #Foresthydrology #Floodfrequencyanalysis #Snowmelt #Causalinference #flood #flooding #forest #forestry #water #hydrology #OkanaganValley #watershed #BC #Canada #BritishCanada #clearcut #logging #harvesting #practices #climatechange #extremeweather #humanimpacts #caseexamples #floodrisk #risk #hazard #probabilistic #framework #attributionscience #policy #planning #UniversityofBritishColumbia | #GovernmentofBritishColumbia

Urban Trees "Urban trees are known to improve air quality, biodiversity and mental health. Despite this, planting in towns and cities is lagging behind need as it is often seen as expensive and hard to establish trees in these environments. We wanted to test if new ideas could be cost-effective and yield a high survival rate. This pilot is led by Kent County Council." https://treecouncil.org.uk/science-and-research/shared-outcomes-fund/urban-tree-establishment/ #Miyawaki #SolarPunkSunday #Forests #Forestry #Trees #AirQuality #BioDiversity #MentalHealth #Kent

We have cowboys in our forests. In 1993 the Samnic Waingaromia Project was launched with a prospectus offering "Invest $80k... get returns of $1.3m." The actual return was $27k and the average investor lost $50k on the deal. Now the same company has appeared before the environment court denying any responsibility for the forestry slash and debris they left behind on a 1,000ha block outside Gisborne. The court wasn't having any of it. Samnic must clean up the remaining woody debris and the directors have been held personally responsible for cleaning up the mess. Karma. https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360729581/forestry-directors-held-personally-responsible-cleaning-mess #NZ #Forestry #Samnic

Update: Almost 12 months have passed since the Environment Court ordered Samnic directors to clean up their Gisborne forestry mess. Remember the 80 or so investors who each lost $50k after being promised a $1m return? Well the three Samnic directors think those people should pick up the bill for their mismanagement. Shareholders are saying "Nah!" Enforcement seems to be a slow process. https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360981807/directors-gun-forestry-clean-demand-payment-shareholders #Samnic #NZ #Environment #Forestry

We're looking to buy a flail mower (slagleklipper, klepelmaaier) and found Deleks. Their products look decent and compared to others prices are even more so. It's a stretch but maybe someone has experience with them and is willing to share their opinion? https://www.deleks.dk/en/p/1173/flail-mower-smart-800 edit: We decided not to buy a flail mower. As to #Deleks specifically: quality appears "random". Mainly it's warranty service that would worry me as it is reported to be bad. #gardening #forestry #woodland #machines
