Live facial recognition (LFR) cameras are to be deployed at some of London's Tube stations from Tuesday. Transport for London (TfL) said the technology would identify people on a police watchlist to help catch "high harm" offenders, such as those wanted for sexual offences, robbery and knife crime. ну регуляція тисне звідусіль, в нас теж свої приколи. обмінники тепер такі документи питають, ніби я паспортний стіл відкриваю. а на біржах KYC розростається до рівня, коли простіше знову під матрацом тримати. по факту поліцаї намагаються контролювати те, що вони не розуміють, а люди просто йдуть в тінь. я за прозорість, але коли за кожен переказ звітувати треба, це вже перебір. хоча у нас до полицеської держави ще далеко, але вектор відчувається. #policestate #crypto #kyc

“The case centers on a feature included in GrapheneOS, a custom Android operating system that runs in place of the software on most modern Google Pixel devices. Tunick’s attorneys confirmed GrapheneOS was running on his phone. The software feature allows the device owner to set a passcode that deliberately wipes the contents of that device if entered instead of the user’s unlock passcode. Tunick’s case also raises ongoing questions about what constitutional rights can be invoked at the border, which the U.S. government has long asserted is not U.S. soil until a person is authorized to enter. "The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) looked at ways to arm quadcopter drones with weapons, according to a draft version of its drone manual shared with 404 Media. A draft version of the manual, which was live on the NOPD website in June, said that the department’s drones could only be equipped with weapons with written approval from the Superintendent of Police. The current version, live as of July 1, has different language: “The sUAS shall not be equipped with weapons or hazardous materials of any kind,” referring to small Unmanned Aerial Systems, or drones. According to the NOPD, the operations manual it published to the internet with the rules for weaponized drones was an early draft. “The manual published on July 1 is the current published version of the policy. Earlier versions were draft versions that were presented for review before adoption of the current policy,” NOPD told 404 media. “NOPD has made it clear we are not and will not be equipping drones with weapons or other hazardous materials.” NOPD didn’t answer follow-up questions about how or why the draft version of the manual was published. So I'm up late, watching the news on YouTube when I stumble across this short (14m) Majority Report Segment, about an anonymized ICE employee, testifying to a local news station about the horrifying and inhumane conditions inside a concentration camp located in the Baltimore George H. Fallon federal building. This "detention center" recently made national news when a whistleblower leaked video showing dozens of migrants crammed inside a single cell like sardines in conditions that well, resembled a concentration camp more than even a jail. Look, I'm not going to lie to you; some of the testimony provided is hard to hear, but this is another story that I think probably has more impact when you hear a real, actual person who was in position to know, talk about the dehumanizing and dangerous conditions inside ICE concentration camps - which as we're learning, appear to be both intentional and systemic in nature, and not the result of one or two bad facilities. As an aside, shoutout to the WUSA 9 news guys here for going super old school on this high-quality journalism. They reported that the ex-ICE employee couldn't be identified because they'd signed an NDA (uh, should we be making people who work for the migrant carceral complex sign NDAs? Is there any innocent reason for that practice?) but confirmed that they did work at the Baltimore facility in question through employment records, so this is about as credible as an anonymous whistleblower interview can possibly be. If only every news organization still cared this much about doing the job right. ICE Worker Leaks Concentration Camp Ghoulish Conditions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8fWTFnmH0w As I mentioned above, the leaker's account of the conditions inside the Baltimore concentration camp are difficult to hear, especially considering the fact that he's clearly still an extremely reactionary immigration hardliner himself. This isn't exactly a person sympathetic to the migrants he was paid to help confine. In very broad strokes the former ICE employee describes habitual and horrific overcrowding, people forced to lay in feces and urine, women forced to wear diapers due to lack of sanitary supplies, as well as physical and psychological abuse of detainees. Furthermore, much of this testimony was supported by headcount sheets, and screenshots from group chats with co-workers. This nightmare is real. I think perhaps the most important part of the leakers testimony however, is their articulation of the way running the concentration camps saw the ICE employees themselves to begin to see the confined migrants as less than human, even literal animals. As any historian worth her salt will tell you, this dehumanization is both an ever-present byproduct of locking people up en masse in concentration camps for the crime of their birth, and a necessary precondition for pogroms, genocides, and other mass extermination programs under reactionary fascist governments. After the segment featuring the ICE concentration camp whistleblower, the video then opens into a broader discussion between Sam Seder and Emma Vigeland about the growing evidence that all of this torture and mistreatment is intentional, to force kidnapped migrants to give up their legal attempts to stay in the country "voluntarily." And finally our hosts close by noting that the secrecy behind all of this dehumanization, torture, and abuse is rooted in the way DHS and ICE function as part of the specially empowered national security state that grew out of US political class reaction to 9/11 and the War on Terror. NSW *Police* have crossed the line.. "Allegations of police throwing punches Labor backbencher Anthony D’Adam says he saw police punching people and throwing someone to the ground, as tensions heated up at the Sydney protest. He said initially police were “getting good cooperation from the crowd”, but then an officer pushed his bike into a woman and “clearly hurt her”. When she got angry, another officer pushed her into the crowd and other bystanders, who fell over, were shocked and angry, and started yelling. He said: That then resulted in a number of other officers joining the fray. They grabbed someone and threw them on to the ground, and then they were just throwing punch after punch at this person. It just seemed totally over the top in terms of the police reaction.
