@khleedril@cyberplace.social Yes, and I admit to having more than a few eye-roll moments at all the mobile linux boosterism seen on fedi. Meanwhile, we are supposed to recoil from FOSS Android because "forks aren't a thing anymore". No. Android is the only successful open source, general-purpose computing platform for consumers. Having a consistent reference GUI and app package format is at least half the reason why.

@toxi@mastodon.thi.ng You said the magic words – personal computing – so I boosted this. I've also been wondering the same thing. But we may never see an email plotting "more centralization" the way we've seen them plotting "make it addictive". Its easier for now to explain the trend as their desire to create immersive, addictive experiences and surveillance. Centralization may be seen as a prerequisite or a side benefit of addictive systems that track people; addicts are easier to stalk since they keep clinging to the surveillance apparatus. Of course, this motive is still political. We should also reflect on how open source has not been a great friend of privacy and autonomy. As early as 2000 in venues like /. I was being lectured that users didn't need an open & feature-stable personal computing platform... the masses would receive Linux freedom in the form of online services and gadgets with Linux and other FOSS buried inside. It happened, but it resulted in the opposite of freedom because it didn't enable non-technical users (tbh most techies didn't like the chaotic Desktop Linux experience, either). In offering no standard or at least defacto UI to users, we offered them zero commitments in the general purpose computing segment (i.e. PCs). Computer science says that commitments are formed as interfaces, and we have denied that the rule also holds for user interfaces. Slathering candy graphics on top of chaos has backfired.

@foolishowl@social.coop Nowadays... Crime scales. Criminals can automate contact with people, and easily do it to people in almost any country. Email and the Web aren't a refuge. The tech culture that promoted easy-to-use trust tools has collapsed; can-do has been replaced with cynicism. You are right to think we are in a bad place with trustworthy communication. I remember those days when phone calls were generally valid.

@thomholwerda@exquisite.social Xiaomi also introduced their new microkernel-based HyperOS. From what I can tell, it is available in Europe as I keep seeing news and reviews of HyperOS 3+ devices here on fedi in non-English European languages. Their microkernel is supposedly a version of Apache's NuttX, so that makes me wonder how much of Xiaomi's stack could be assembled from open source.

@grandwordiness@fosstodon.org Right now no one can prove that code was made with LLMs that do not greedily scrape independent sites until they are forced offline. Codeberg has had a lot of downtime because of LLMs, too much IMO. https://stephenfollows.com/p/what-just-happened-to-thenumberscom-should-worry-us-all It boils down to a simple survival issue, and the answer cannot be that you have to reside in the belly of a giant conglomerate to get work done. The hypocrisy stinks to high heaven as these corps are some of the heaviest users and promoters of captchas, age verification, and outright surveillance.

They did it gladly, and with great alacrity for just a couple hundred bucks. Then I look at the majority cut that Crowd Supply/Mouser commands and their opaque delay on fulfillment. It’s not fair to the workers, it’s not fair to me, and most importantly, it’s not fair to the backers. I have to wonder what other channels could facilitate a project like this. @buckfiftyseven@mastodon.social I disagree. Linux embodies an outdated architecture and a microkernel will greatly reduce the amount and severity of security issues. Linux wasn't providing a way to reach for the future – stemming the insane tidalwave of exploits we see in the news every week – and the public's willingness to be herded into a dystopia hinges greatly on that legacy of insecurity. The fact that most of us are talking about microkernels is an indicator our interest is anything but "just because".

The unspoken assumption is always that parents won't take responsibility and set limits. So all arguments about age verification (both pro and con) insist that kids must have an accessible online presence. (Egads!) Parenting is the excluded middle, so its a contest between anarchy and fascism. Guess who always wins that contest...

@mxchara@seattle.pink Gnome is the favorite default DE of most large distros: Less licensing issues that might (theoretically) pop up, and a lot fewer features to maintain than KDE. Users often switch to KDE or something else because they want a 'regular' desktop with features and not a mobile-inspired UI. KDE strikes a better functionality and "just works" balance for me, even though it has a reputation for not liking nVidia setups (I avoid nVidia because they're hostile to open source). FWIW, my first desktop was Enlightenment way back in '98.

Replying to @schrieveslaach@fosstodon.org
@schrieveslaach@fosstodon.org @scottjenson@social.coop Open source needs a lot of UX help Yes. It needs to show commitment to the wider community because the candy-graphics approach hasn't worked. If UIs are not consistent (we throw different, unrelated UIs at users all the time) then the computer science rule of interfaces says we have a problem. We as a developer community are refusing to make the "interface promise" and users correctly interpret that as chaos. The denial that the interface consistency rule applies to user interfaces comes from an anti-user mindset. Android bucked this trend by supplying a reference UI. The result was wide acceptance. I think we should forget about Desktop Linux (which underneath is just a religious quest to make the masses love Unix) and focus on forking Android with its new desktop mode. We get user acceptance and (probable) access to a much larger array of apps, an SDK that developers actually use, and a universe of use cases and other ideas that translate into products that users readily understand.

@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social The global far right is operating within a mode of language and communication that many liberals simply don’t understand. We’ve got to get better at grasping it—and countering it. Didn't Umberto Eco make a specific point about Nazi's use of slippery language while they consolidated power? There is definitely some gap in contemporary understanding. For example, I keep hearing lately that someone has uncovered the special "new link" between technology and fascism. Um, techno-fascism is actually the original fascism. Please... look it up.

Replying to @chroma@raccoonisland.social
@chroma@raccoonisland.social @flyingpenguin@infosec.exchange Fedi UX is inconvenient and/or broken in a number of ways. Its not the fact that people have to choose an instance. Its the fact that the fedi rubric still doesn't know what to do when you click on a link to fedi content, and no other application knows either. So an Ivory user may click on a link to a regular web page, and if that web page (or any page on any site) links to fedi content then the user will likely end up on a Mastodon web page – not Ivory – which doesn't recognize them and (gasp!) presents a prompt to log in to their home instance (on the web, not Ivory). The confusion is compounded by the makings of an eventual security nightmare; phisher's delight. There is so much UX f_ckery contained in that one example that I'm positive anyone encountering it more than once – and is not a techie who easily recognizes the context rug pulls and hops over them as you and I do – will probably run away from this. Non-fedi web sites can't effectively link to fedi content, because you are going to land on the author's instance not your own. So authors who began experimenting with fedi en masse in 2022 don't expose their readers to the fediverse.. they just keep using the "Share with Facebook/X/Insta" links. That is a sad, if not dead, ecosystem. Does the lack of monetization drain urgency from these UX issues? It might. But IMO, that still leaves us with a competence issue in much the same way that a Linux community which insists on presenting 7 different GUI options to users is a competence issue. Mastodon is the Linux Desktop of social media, and monetization won't make it popular. If monetization thoroughly explained the gap in popularity, we would see a version of the fediverse with instances that display ads. The problem is that the ActivityPub spec is incomplete (it should have a protocol handler definition) in addition to a raft of other UX issues that are ignored or even aggravated by Mastodon devs.

@firefoxwebdevs@mastodon.social In the Linux desktop context (not browser) I regularly encounter tooltips that get in the way of me clicking on the thing underneath. I wish that was handled more intelligently. FOSS devs also need to learn sane practice in handling menus & sub-menus. The Network Manager UI will update and reset (close) the AP selector submenu less than 1sec after the user opens it. Also, no hysteresis whatsoever when moving between menus. Re OP: Its nice to know that web standards can still improve. But the web is no longer trusted by most of society; it has been demoted in favor of the app walled gardens you mention. This means the user seldom has any direct relationship with URLs or other Internet structures. @mconley@fosstodon.org
