According to uptime I'm now a full week into my Jolla Phone 2 adventure. I absolutely love the phone. Phone calls are crisp and clear, no connectivity issues so far, Bluetooth works with all devices I've tried it with (not many, but VAPPEBY Portable, Sennheiser Momentum M2 AEBT, Shure AONIC 40 and Toyota Touch 2 with Go). Signal works (both natively using Whisperfish available on Storeman or using the Android app through AppSupport). Other than that I've got Bitwarden and Authenticator going, Nextcloud sync, Obsidian, my bank's app, my public transit service's app, my mail service's app and a lot of other stuff. The fingerprint scanner is super fast and unlocks the phone the moment I touch it. It all feels really smooth. I can't seem to organize icons on the app menu, which is something I'd like to do; I'm sure there's a patch or dot file for that, but it should be easily accessible. On the home screen you can see open apps, but the screen preview/thumbnails are often missing so I have to guess what apps they are. I hope that is also fixed in an upcoming release. When it comes to photo quality it is quite good in daylight, but in low light settings it's terrible. I'll get around to posting some samples later. I previously said speaker audio is not good, but it's actually not that bad. I did an informal comparison for myself between the iPhone 14 and the Jolla 2 and I think the iPhone is slightly better—sound feels fuller on the iPhone, while there's a bit of a reverb/accent thing going on with the Jolla. I've been testing the new #Jolla phone for a couple of days now. At the same time I'm documenting the experience and I will publish it as an honest review on my blog. So far I should say that it is a very smooth experience. Native app availavility is an issue, but because we xan install Android apps, situation is not bad at all. I installed Signal, WhatsApp, #DeltaChat and they all work very smoothly. Well done @jolla@techhub.social #SailfishOS

#Jolla phone update from today's usage: Needed to identify for a new service using BankID - and while BankID itself works fine using the Android "App Support" emulation layer I realized any web page that has a "identify with BankID" link (very common) won't work since the Sailfish OS web browser is unable to follow such a link into the Android system. This follows on the realization where Proton Pass on "the Android side" means it's much easier to fill in passwords when I'm using Android vs when using native Sailfish OS. This might become my top priority to sort out somehow. I _really_ don't want the Jolla to just become an Android wrapper - because it would be "easy" to just start using the browser on the Android side here otherwise ...

So actually I a bit disappointed by the first hour with my #Jolla phone. There is really not software in the store. Do I have to install repos? Can they be trusted? Camera is well ... Ok

Getting my #Jolla phone tomorrow. I am quite sure that I will not become my main phone, but any tips for software?

@inlovewithpda@chaos.social i use my #jolla as my main driver and have done so for over a year. It has all the apps required for online banking, e-id, communications (signal; protonmail; etc), social media, photo, navigation, etc. Mainstream apps are from Google's Play store (via "Aurora"), but some apps that I'm happy to promote that are not from there include:

  • Organic Maps (F-Droid store, Navigation)
  • Weather (native Jolla app)
  • OpenCamera (F-Droid, photo)
  • Moshidon (F-Droid, Mastodon client)
  • Librera Readee (F-Droid, PDF\ebook reader)

First identified friction with #Jolla phone that I'll either need to find an existing workaround for or start making one myself - DPI/zoom. I'm old. Those five icons wide app panels and the extremely tiny text sizes in Android apps where I can't modify it (the only system wide setting is for text in the #Sailfish OS UI) did get problematic as dusk set in yesterday evening. There seem to be community documented dpi settings to modify using the shell but I'd rather look into if there's any issues or work done at system level and maybe hop in.
