Hi, ich bin ein 71er Baujahr und seit fast 30 Jahren im Bereich der IT tätig. Konnte und wollte mich immer aus den sogenannten "sozialen" Netzwerken raushalten (bis auf Business). Durch den Hype, den EM ausgelöst hat, habe ich mir gedacht ich schaue mir mal das Fedivers an.

After installing the original #murena /e/OS #eos update to 4.1.1-a16 on my #Fairphone 6, all web content is loading extremely slowly. It doesn’t matter which app I’m using – the browser, Mastodon, etc. Can anyone else confirm this?
I’ve already switched off the VPN.

Dit alles in samenwerking met de Jelster Brouwerij in Rotterdam.

Is there here in the Fediverse anyone with experience using Android Auto on /e/OS?
I understand that Android auto requires Google Apps, which isn’t ideal from a privacy perspective. In that case, I wouldn’t use Google Maps but Sygic instead.
I’m also hoping that if certain Google apps are required, this won’t immediately compromise the entire phone.
I also read on doc.e.foundation/os/how-to/and… that there are options available. However, that information is for /e/OS 2. /e/OS 4.1 has since been released. Perhaps there have been changes in the meantime that affect this.

I'm going to upgrade and see where this is going. The main reason for this is my now working banking app (Triodos) and DigID (Dutch government ID app). But I will still try to find an alternative for when it goes wrong again. You can of course draw your own conclusion.
✏️ edit: My OTA update is not yet ready. It's a so called staggered release, so this was expected.

Yes, you've heard it right, #Murena goes vendor lock-in! It's now 100% clear that it's not about a Google alternative, but about their own payed services (what is just a customized Nextcloud).
There are also some other bugs, that only will be fixed in 4.2 or 4.3, but nothing about the Seedvault removal. So people can't choose their backup location anymore. Multiple people asked on their forum, but no definitive answer was given. See here: https://community.e.foundation/t/feedback-for-v4-1-1
This is not their first time they messed it up. They also removed Material You, so they force you to use blue accent colours.
Hopefully someone knows how to safely migrate to #LineageOS or another reliable custom ROM for a #Fairphone 6?

@bartek@social.brtk.eu Ta jedna wada LineageOS tj. że nie jest skonfigurowany od razu po instalacji, sprawia, że nawet nie rozważam LineageOS i zdecydowanie wybieram system /e/. Nie chcę tracić czasu na konfigurowanie i w ogóle zajmowanie się sprawami technicznymi. System /e/ umożliwia mi korzystanie z całej masy dobrze skonfigurowanych rzeczy od razu po instalacji, w tym z przestrzeni Nextcloud w ramach #Murena która po prostu ułatwia życie. Jeśli miałbym sam to wszystko sobie konfigurować, to pewnie korzystałbym ze zwykłego googlowego Androida - na co nie mam żadnej chęci.
A oddolny marketing eOS to jest po prostu społeczność zadowolonych użytkowników. Jestem jednym z nich.

Deze app werkt niet op het grootste Europese mobiele OS, /e/OS (>100.000 gebruikers). We komen graag in contact met de ontwikkelaars van deze app, want dit is absoluut niet nodig.
Dit komt door Play Integrity, waarvoor goede alternatieven beschikbaar zijn die net zo veilig (veiliger!) zijn maar WEL werken op /e/OS.

I prefer currently #eos mainly for those reasons (now) even when sailfish would be my choice of heart and I will reevaluate in 12 months again …

0) Ux seems currently a bit better on fp6 ( productivity)
1) more often software builds (since they are Android fork) / faster updates
2) all my important apps (password mgr, banking, government) run since 6 months (… lasted 6 months to get them to work)
3) the community seems more professional and less „emotional / hardcore“
4) nfc payment works
What I really liked about sailfish:
0) Less to no ties to the google / apple universe
1) the ui seems more focused and less nagging
2) the hardware of the new Jolla phone at least for me feels much better (even if it is midrange)
Bottom line: both worked well, BUT sailfish has some Android app compatibility issues still (can not set a security pin on the app / Android universe… therefore many apps refuse working), if critical apps work I give it another try.. (

September 2026 entscheidet ein Google-Systemdienst, ob eine App auf deinem Android installiert werden darf, egal ob sie aus dem Play Store, von F-Droid oder per Kabel vom eigenen Rechner kommt. Deinstallieren kannst du ihn nicht, und was als Malware gilt, bestimmt Google allein. Reden wir drüber!

Last week I installed @murena@mastodon.social /e/os 4.0 on another Fairphone 5 at our @HSN@hsnl.social hackerspace for a visitor.
Although I had done this many times for family and friends, I always feel hesitant when doing this for a 'stranger'.
Installation was a breeze (after I figured out that the Fairphone unlock bootloadercode needed to be entered without capitals) and the owner of the Fairphone reported me today after a few days of use he is very happy with it!

Wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe, ersetzt /e/OS die Google Service durch MicroG.
Wenn man z.B. auf ein Fairphone mit /e/OS wechselt, auf dem jetzigen Telefon Apps verwendet, die über den PlayStore Apps gekauft wurden, kann man diese Apps unter /e/OS weiterhin als "gekauft" nutzen?
Ich vermute mal nein.

e/OS 4 på Fairphone 6: Någon annan som har haft problem med att köpa biljett i #SJ eller #Mälartåg appar? Hos mig stod de bara och tuggade utan att jag fick upp något pris. Stängde av spårningsblockare och falsk geolokation, men funkade inte ändå så det var nog något annat?
Lyckades köpa biljett på SJs hemsida, men stressigt och något biljettkontrollen kommer bråka om eftersom det är fel biljett.

After my kudo's for my #FP6 #eos phone, it is only fair to also give some praise to my @tuxedocomputers@linuxrocks.online InfinityBook Pro 15 laptop. I was lucky enough to have bought it before the #AI gods decided they were entitled to all the RAM in the world, so it's got 96GB of RAM and 8TB of SDD's. It runs super stable on TuxedoOS, which is a tailored version of Kubuntu. And it's developed and assembled in Germany.
It's very nice to have a laptop build by a company that focusses on Linux only, in contradiction to my previous Dell XPS-13 that basically ran out of Linux support after a year.
