@RuthMalan@mastodon.social WELL AS I SAID, and as experienced right now, even "frontier" model like opus-5 doesn't have the least f**ing idea of a mental model of the software. You really have to spell it out things that are just obviously (in)consistent. It is very hard working and extremelly capable to follow codes, even between system borders, but it doesn't have any notion of coherence. It's just data and code.

@RuthMalan@mastodon.social you can still learn interesting things : we use llm to explore code in mob programming. The llm do the heavy greping, the knowledgeable people explain why it is so, sometimes (ok, every time) we find inconsistencies. Also "agent" are not pure llm anymore. The llm is more like a query engine in natural language that relies on deterministic tools (compilers, etc) to do things. So for our Scala/rust/elm functional programing stack, the guards are ok. It still needs heavy guidance for design, but the mechanical chores are ok. It doesn't change anything on all other aspects (energy, training, monopoly building, bubble, etc etc). And for the mental model of the code, perhaps we will get there. We are not. Even with its memories and skills and etc, the agent needs to be checked on all like of code.

Its use at industrial scale in triangular trade is concomitant with the shift between renaissance and industrial age, the development of European colonialism and modern capitalism, and I think it's what you referred too in your post about "a few hundred years". But yes, if that's all, it's what I mean by "at first" : before we have a clear understanding about the externalities and long term impact, what wd aspire to be as humans, and the whole point of : it's not because something seems good for a moment that it was - all things considered -, and should be apply to all futur cases.

If it's not that, sorry for misunderstanding, perhaps you could use that misunderstanding to wonder why people misunderstood you. So : even if you consider that European imperialism and capitalism helped fastened the transition from level 1 to level 4 of country demographic transition, you can understand that : something helping at some point doesn't mean it's the best solution, or even that it can be a bad option in other context. For example, we ignored at first the horror of slavery because having free manpower was cheap and easy and externalities didn't impacted privileged ones; we abused burning oil because almost free storable and movable power was cheap and easy (oh, a pattern) and then we were forced to considered the externalities (climate impact, etc)even in that context, there's huge differences between how capitalism is done. For ex, given a capital of underground oil, USA chose to privatise it and enrich a few, building a cast of privileged people fashioning laws to help them and bind others, while Norway chose to make it benefits its whole population, giving free medical care and affordable housing and other perks to its citizenin any cases, you must be careful when you judge past civilizations through the eyes of European colons. We rediscovere now (or stop to ignore) that cultures and practiced that looked inefficient and not modern by European colons standards were actually extremely well adapted and innovative for the context, or didn't understood private property in the same way but where sustainable and assured well being of its populations. If there's a thing that capitalism is not, it is symbiose with it's environment. At best, it's parasitic. we could also discuss how capitalism forced to put a price on "one hour of labour", and how it completely changed the relationship of people to time, and forced what is "correctly using time" upon everyone; - and how efficiency and automation applied at other things than cores (which is liberating) is often just a reason to force people do more with less time, and that capitalism come back to using at most (not at best), until rupture, resources, including humans. We can go on and on, I didn't even started to talk about emancipation and universalism

@Viss @lfzz oh yes, there's a special socio-economic chaos that happens when something price reaches 0, and we're not here yet. We are reaching the cheap-enough-to-create-big-opportunity-cost industrialized vuln discovery age. I totally see an economic building up around that, where some well funded bad actors have the possibility to train efficient specialized light weigh models (not mythos like, which are energy and money black hole, and so not interesting for earning money), then sell their older ones to a broader classes of bad actors, these models finally reaching script-kiddies like cost, where they will be tried on so many unprepared (or old, unmaintained) software and cases than enough will succeed

@Viss @lfzz there's several very interesting points in that article : of course the hype about mythos was over-the-top,actually it wasn't much better than cheap, specialized weighted models - and that's the important part for me, because automated models do help expert teams be much more efficient, so we are walking into a world where discovering vulnerabilities is much cheaper, with an asymmetry in cost (you need to be successful in finding a good vuln only once) And that create a massive incentive to a whole new classe of people, like spam in the age of cheap emails and hard counter measures, or scam, or cryptolocker/cryptomoney as a good way to monetize vuln, or etc

For immediate mitigation, block AF_ALG socket creation via seccomp or blacklist the algif_aead module:

Be careful, Fedora and RedHat derivatives have the module built-in and so it can't be removed

They want to put solar panel in space - with all the negative externalities it brings, in addition to the operational and maintenance nightmare - to then send back light to Earth solar panel? Why not just put more solar panels and batteries on earth and be done?

@matthieu@framapiaf.org the solar is the trigger (it could have been something else) but also the systemic enabler : solar (and wind) don't provide inertia buffer by construction like turbines, so you have to add them to the grid explicitly, which is not done because it's extremely costly and complexe and breaks the narrative about easy, clean energy and simpler grid. (Edit : it's relevant in the context of that thread because my point was that the quoted article was misunderstanding how electricity grid behaves, and that the benefits quoted are wishful thinking, and that we have existing case of what actually happen at system level for massively solard grid : more instability, not more resilience). For China and inverter and no Internet connection: well, perhaps, but the main stream is not going there, it's going toward "smart", managed systems. You personnaly might remain secure, but it will more and more means fighting mainstream (like linux circa 2000). And if you are in a quasi monopolistic system, the provider decide (like windows for supported hardware/bios behavior). And for the global supply chain : yes of course, but the fact that our politician and decideurs can't understand supply chain risk for SaaS is more an argument for "they won't understand it for solar" than against
