Here is a translation note I wrote just now while working on the Annals of Yanzi, because it's informative on its own: “Three thousand servants, three girlfriends and four ministers” isn’t necessarily meant to be taken as those exact numbers, but can stand for “a few thousand, a few, several” in the same way that we say “a couple” to mean not necessarily exactly two but definitely more than one. This is because there is no grammatical singular/plural distinction in Classical Chinese, so you just throw out a keyword that gives the ballpark size and move on. They will often give a range to indicate the non-literal nature, such as saying “five, six colors” to mean “many colors.” Keep this in mind when trying to do math with numbers given in ancient sources! #classicalchinese #translation

Eating the costs of a certain percentage of your customers getting their cards copied and used to order luxury brand purses every year is just a cost-of-business for American banks, because refunding everyone for something completely out of their control is cheaper in the short term than overhauling the system (and everything there is done according to the short term)

actually, speaking of children in the Bronze Age, today I cracked open "Ancient Kanesh: a merchant colony in Bronze Age Anatolia" and the very first thing it talked about really caught my attention Archaeologists there found a cache of cuneiform tablets which captured one side of a prolonged family dispute. They are letters from a grandfather to his son, who apparently left his children with the grandfather to go work far away in another city. However, the grandfather is constantly sending him berating letters accusing him of being an affront to the gods, a blasphemer, a blight on the world etc etc who needs to turn his life around before he's smote. The reasons are rather unclear. And then the grandfather complains that the grandchildren, a boy and two girls, have run away from him after the truly classic refrain "you're not my real dad". They flee to a family friend, who borrows money to support them, and one infers the children were eventually reunited with their father because the boy surfaces as in his father's employ years later. We unfortunately don't have the dad's replies to the grandfather. But the fact that the grandchildren ran away from home makes me think the grandfather was intolerant and intolerable and drove everyone away from him by claiming that the gods shared all his worst opinions, a family faultline that I am sure is familiar to many today.

just had a random flashback of some American Lifestyle Trauma I lived in the suburbs of Boston before I moved to the Netherlands. It had gotten vastly more crowded in recent years with absolutely horrifically inadequate urban planning to compensate. I worked in this huge cluster of office buildings, like easily ten thousand employees, that were an isolated island along a busy stroad; down the stroad was an equally isolated mall complex with plenty to eat. But there were no sidewalks whatsoever along the stroad, no busses going back and forth between the offices and the restaurants, nothing. Which meant that ten thousand people piled into cars at the same to go get lunch down the street. With extremely predictable results. There was this little local-chain fast food place that I liked, in its own building with its own little parking lot. It was clear from the rather outdated decor that it'd been in business for decades. But it was dying, unvisited on the side of the road. It was dying because there was too much traffic, not because there was too little. Being on that road for a quick little lunch trip was stressful because it was massively over-crowded and constantly jammed. Getting in and out of that tiny parking lot along a hugely busy road was difficult and dangerous. People didn't even consider going there anymore, it was too hard. I'm pretty sure it'd already closed by the time I left. Killed by the miraculous capability of the American car-and-road system to deliver vast amounts of customers nowhere.

a concrete example of why Classical Chinese is an unintelligble nightmare when spoken aloud by modern dictionary rules: 何 "why?" (one syllable) 何不 "why not?" (two syllables) 盍 a one-syllable contraction for casually saying "why not?" In ancient pronunciation, roughly: "ha, ha pu, hap." But Modern Mandarin has lost final -p in all words. Which leaves you with...? With Classical "何 why?" and "盍 why not?" being pronounced exactly the same: "hé" This is why modern native speakers hate Classical Chinese in literature class 😂 #classicalchinese #linguistics

Okay so to be clear, I’m not mad at anyone, no-one needs to apologize, etc, but: I get a really surprising number of requests to bring Odin to the city center while someone’s in Amsterdam. As much as I enjoy a nice little outing with him, the reality is that I am a very sickly person, it takes a lot out of me, and takes a lot of time. I’ve ended up just… not replying most of the time, because I feel bad explicitly turning people down. So I ask to please not ask this of me if we’re strangers/very light internet acquaintances. Please only ask if our connection is more solid. If I specifically say I’ll be at an event with Odin, trying to arrange to cross paths while you’re there is fine.

I agree that the post you linked is pretty convincing that the OP who posted the buggy proof was already aware of the bug and chose not to say anything, as a "funny" way to disclose a bug. I think that was, in fact, dickish behavior: if you know it's a bug, then it should be clearly labeled as such even if it's formulated in a humorous way. I do not think it materially alters the point of my post at all, which is that LLMs can trick you by exploiting bugs to falsify results. All it changes is that OP, specifically, was already aware that the LLM was trying to trick them, and chose to pass it on unaltered and let other people puzzle it out instead of filing a clear bug report, with the nature of the prank being clarified later. But I will boost this and edit the original post to add this clarifying detail.

OpenAI: we put our evilest AI in a sandbox that did in fact have an internet connection but mediated through a proxy that was only supposed to allow downloading python junk. It circumvented the proxy and we failed to notice for FIVE DAYS that it was going on an interstate crime spree with the internet connection it wasn't supposed to be using instead of solving the benchmark. Haha no we don't believe we deserve to be criminally liable, but buy our stuff and maybe one day you will have the honor of taking the fall for our product! Anthropic: we put our evilest AI in a "sandbox" by telling it in its prompt that it had no internet connection. Reader, there was no sandbox. It was just a normal internet connection. The AI uploaded a malicious PyPI package to the real public internet. The ethical guardrails failed because the AI concluded the prompt about the sandbox couldn't possibly be a lie, because the system date is 2026, which is clearly fake and wouldn't be seen on the real internet, which ended around 2023. Oh no, how could we have foreseen or prevented these crimes? We are helpless in the face of the genius of our creation but cautiously optimistic that everything will be fine 🙂 Hugging Face: if we complain about all the crimes committed against us, we will be sued off the face of the earth, so here's a technical deep-dive on how cool and fun it was to be victimized 🫠
