On the receiving end of this today: a Russian academic contacted me to discuss "emotional policymaking" in the Baltics without any recognition of the potential issues / complexities of a Russian conducting this research and imperial legacies in the region. I'm sure it would come up over the course of subsequent conversations but ignoring that it is indeed loaded in the initial email doesn't inspire me with hope that Baltic "grievances" will be dealt with sensitively.

Disappointing to still hear people make the "Russians are scared" argument about why Russians don't protest. I'm sure they are. So were Ukrainians when they camped out on Maidan 2013-2014, being shot, kidnapped and tortured, until their corrupt president fled the country. Sometimes there are more important things than self-preservation.

And the majority of Russians (~2/3 of the country) support the war.

@mloxton@med-mastodon.com there's definitely a deeper problem with societies being geared towards the loud, selfish, and obnoxious. But appearances can be deceptive too, I've stood in front of men like this before, nodding and smiling, thinking about how awful they are the entire time and how they are wasting my evening. One can only hope that the people who actually do value these traits will destroy one another through their own terrible, hollow relationships, and leave the rest of us alone!

Oh my god, this so hard. And I think it especially applies to women (who are handed repeated messages that their value lies in their youth and beauty). You get better at boundaries, you don't tolerate pathetic men trying to guilt trip you into giving them your time, you stop coddling people who are actively negative influences / energy vampires ...
