Effective October 1 2026, New York City will enforce a “Click‑to‑Cancel” rule that requires companies to make ending an online subscription as simple as signing up, allowing consumers to cancel by the same digital method rather than in‑person, by mail or through lengthy phone queues. The rule, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, DCWP Commissioner Sam Levine, and former FTC Commissioner Lina Khan, follows a failed federal attempt and builds on similar state laws in California, Maryland, and Colorado. It aims to curb “subscription traps” used by major firms such as Uber and Adobe, which have faced lawsuits for hard‑to‑cancel recurring services, and is expected to save New Yorkers between $21.5 million and $162.5 million annually. Businesses that violate the rule will face civil penalties starting at $525 per violation, with complaints filed through the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection and enforced via 311 calls. The initiative is part of a broader city effort to curb predatory pricing and hidden “junk fees,” which researchers estimate cost the average family of four over $3,200 per year.
