#band #klezmer #Balkanmusic #accordion #Akkordeon #Tenorhorn #music #folkmusic #klezmermusic #Balkanmusik

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@dragginganox/116637255126318770 I'm going to post again about this album by @dragginganox@infosec.exchange which I've played over and over since first hearing it only 48 hours ago. My regret is that I didn't encounter it when it was released in March. The links to listen and buy this record are in the post of Brian's I've quoted below. At first blush, and I blush to say it, this isn't typically what I'd normally listen to. But it has grabbed me repeatedly by the grubby lapels with its musical and lyrical insistences, its melancholy folk-and-electronics collisions and coincidences. And those lyrics. These lines are from the heart-crushing ‘Focal Fires’, the final song on the album: "Fresh growth on the dark boundary of the earth Glacial time in the melted core by the dogwood I clipped the blossoms in the small hours and cut my hand I pressed them and lived on the dim border I left something in the house but I don't know what it is A cherished gap in the archive Witness the deaccession form A loose tile marks the window The wind is singing through the traces And the palinoptic sunlight Dims the border” That song has a hazy, smoke-wreathed synthesizer melody following the verses that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time, without fail. And this album does not fail. Thank you Brian, from this Brian, for making this glistering record that I now hear reflected in the dew of the early morning and the too-hot shadows of evening. #DraggingAnOxThroughWater #BrianMumford #AlbumsOfTheYear #FolkMusic #ElectronicMusic #ExperimentalFolk #IDontReallyKnowHowToDescribeThisButItsWonderful

Today in Labor History July 14, 1912: Folk singer Woody Guthrie was born. During World War II, he wrote the song "Talking Hitler's Head Off Blues." Around this time, he also painted THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS on his guitar. He saw fascism as a “form of economic exploitation similar to slavery.” During the Great Depression, he romanticized the deeds of outlaws like Jesse James and Pretty Boy Floyd as legitimate acts of social responsibility and protest against those who were responsible for the worsening social and economic conditions of working-class people. #workingclass #LaborHistory #woodyguthrie #folk #folkmusic #singer #protest #antifascist #union #antifascism #socialism #fascism

I'm going to make a video of a new song soon. Just a simple thing, political, of the moment. Solo. One camera, one take. What common mistakes have you noticed (besides using AI of course) that people make when they post their new songs? #music #youtube #peerTube #klezmer #folkmusic

More recorder: Actual folk recorder playing, which totes exists, is really hard to find out about. Meet the sjofloyte, "sea flute”, the Norwegian folk recorder, except sometimes it's just a standard manufactured alto. If anybody else knows about actual folk recorder traditions, i.e. not just people playing folk tunes on recorder out of a book, do let us all know please! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c9ckNdFC88 #Recorder #NorwegianFolkMusic #Folkmusic #ethnomusicology

Come with me to the Luke Kelly Festival in Dublin 🇮🇪 A family friendly festival organised by Dublin City Council, celebrating the iconic folksinger. I took part in a panel with Steve Byrne chaired by Donal Fallon discussing Luke's love for Scots song and the state of play of folksong in Scotland today. We went to Norways oldest festival going since 1923! Landskappleiken is a national championship in #folkmusic and it moves to a new location every year. This time it was in Hovden in Setesdal where the tradition stands strong. Believe it or not no youtuber has made a serious effort at covering this amazing festival so we just had to! If you ever have the chance to attend it I would wholeheartedly recommend going it was amazing! https://youtu.be/-HOU6Cn_4EU?si=1SqZXfYk91r1YGEG #folkmusic #folkdance #norway #youtuber

REVIEW: Honestly, this is one of the best albums I've heard this year. On A Rising Tide, Jennie Arnau gives us stories about people muddling through, and trying to keep their light shining – and they're told with a breathtakingly wide imagination. Arnau is an excellent storyteller, and these songs will stay with you. Judy Collins #3 is the third studio album by the American singer and songwriter Judy Collins. Review by Richie Unterberger Having established herself as one of the foremost interpreters of traditional material, Collins did the same for contemporary folk songwriters on this album, which mixed standards with pristine covers of compositions by Dylan, Bob Gibson, Pete Seeger, Ewan MacColl, and Shel Silverstein. With Jim (Roger) McGuinn arranging and playing second guitar and banjo, this album, which included a fine version of Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn!," had a clear (if overlooked) influence on the folk-rock he pioneered with the Byrds a couple years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHX_1tb3Wck #JudyCollins #RogerMcGuinn #TheByrds #FolkMusic #BobDylan #EwanMcColl #Music #PeteSeeger

The Big Hewer - A Radio Ballad by Ewan MacColl, Charles Parker & Peggy Seeger, released on Argo in 1967 but first broadcast on the BBC Home Service in 1960. Coalmining presented itself as a natural subject for a radio ballad since Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger had spent part of 1960 working as resident songwriters and music arrangers for the National Coal Board film department. The Big Hewer was the fourth in the series and named after the mythically prodigious miner of coal legend who appears by a different name in each mining locality (a similar figure with superhuman work powers, John Henry, exists in American work gang mythology). https://ewanmaccoll.bandcamp.com/album/the-radio-ballads-the-big-hewer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf7LuLSJBLM #EwanMcColl #PeggySeeger #CharlesParker #RadioBallad #FolkMusic #CoalMining #BBC #Music

Ok, I found the coolest thing ever. ===Cyberpunk Bluegrass Music=== @coreysnipes@hachyderm.io suggested I look into Bluegrass in addition to my current studies of Irish Trad music as I learn how to play the Irish whistle. That makes sense as a lot of Bluegrass stems from old Irish music. In my search for Bluegrass music with Irish whistles, I stumbled across Justin Myles Holmes' "Barlow's Jig". And get this... after listening to an Irish whistle, a banjo, a fiddle, and other instruments playing a bluegrass jig... ...you hear a voiceover reading of "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace (1996)" written by none other than John Perry Barlow, founding member of the @eff@mastodon.social John Perry Barlow. Barlow's Jig. My worlds have collided. Heck, I'd argue that Folk Music + Calls for Digital Independence = Solarpunk !!! Give it a listen here (the voiceover starts at 2:45 but listen to the leadup as well): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck8AZA11oYQ&list=OLAK5uy_n1BAK9bfUT9iwOo8yTRVfKeYI-St_9TME&index=11 (full URL just includes the song itself and a playlist for the album. No tracking parameters) #solarPunk #cyberPunk #folkMusic #tradMusic #bluegrass #tinWhistle

The GoldeBriars by The GoldeBriars, released in 1964 on Epic. Review by Richie Unterberger The Goldebriars' debut album is clean-cut folk-pop with bright, high female-male harmonies, sometimes foreshadowing the searing high harmonic blends typical of group member (and arranger) Curt Boettcher's later rock productions.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLNaa57B3fs&list=RDMLNaa57B3fs&start_radio=1 #TheGoldebriars #CurtBoettcher #FolkMusic #FolkRock #Music

The Watersons by The Watersons, released on Topic in 1966. Sleeve Notes The Watersons sing songs from all over the country but pay special attention to those collected in their native East Yorkshire. They live in Hull, the great seaport beside the Humber that also produced one of our greatest poets, Andrew Marvell; and in Hull they have for some years run their famous club, Folk Union One. https://mainlynorfolk.info/watersons/records/thewatersons.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66qUOmGbvIQ #TheWatersons #NormaWaterson #MikeWaterson #LalWaterson #FolkMusic #Hull #Music #TraditionalSongs #TopicRecords
