Today in Labor History July 14, 1912: Folk singer Woody Guthrie was born. During World War II, he wrote the song "Talking Hitler's Head Off Blues." Around this time, he also painted THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS on his guitar. He saw fascism as a “form of economic exploitation similar to slavery.” During the Great Depression, he romanticized the deeds of outlaws like Jesse James and Pretty Boy Floyd as legitimate acts of social responsibility and protest against those who were responsible for the worsening social and economic conditions of working-class people. #workingclass #LaborHistory #woodyguthrie #folk #folkmusic #singer #protest #antifascist #union #antifascism #socialism #fascism

As a professional #singer, one of my performance jobs is to #sing for churches. Today I performed a setting of Katharine Lee Bates’s original poetic text, “#America. A Poem for July 4.”, which was first published in the July 4, 1895, issue of The Congregationalist. 🧵
