I was listening to William S. Burroughs' "The Priest" this evening during yet another impromptu drive down to the low desert, and it reminded me of a few things. I'd made. I've shared these before in various places, but here we are yet again, and so here they are yet again.
The first is "Pain", a small 16x20" piece I finished sometime in 2019. I remember painting this -- we were renting this weird room at the time from a woman who really didn't want to rent to us because we weren't students and we weren't Chinese and she would show up at the house at odd hours and bang on our door with silly reasons for coming in. I'd always hide my paintings, lest she decide we were no longer desirable enough to rent to. I forgot to water her flowers for her and they died, and I felt really bad.
The second is yet untitled and unfinished, but is something I started a long time ago, when we first moved here to the Ranch. It's one of those pieces that evades finishing a bit: every time I start on it again the world becomes a bit more chaotic and I lose the time to work in the layers of oil properly before they fully cure, and then when I return I do so knowing this painting is never really going to be "good" in the sense that it fully cures and starts to yellow before layers are added and that's not technically great for an oil painting. And yet it begs to be finished nonetheless, and so one day it will be.
