Ainsi de Ténèbres - plus vastes -
Ces Crépuscules du Cerveau -
Quand nulle Lune ne se manifeste -
Nulle Étoile - au-dedans - ne perce -
Les plus Braves - tâtonnent un peu -
Et parfois heurtent un Arbre
En plein Front - mais à mesure
Qu'ils apprennent à voir -
Ou bien la Ténèbre s'allège -
Ou quelque chose dans la vue
À la Minuit s'adapte -
Et à la Vie va presque droite.
Emily Dickinson
Thus, from Darkness – vaster still –
These twilights of the mind –
When no moon makes itself known –
No star – within – breaks through –
The bravest – grope about a little –
And sometimes bump into a tree
Right in the forehead – but as
They learn to see –
Either the Darkness lightens –
Or something in their vision
Adapts to the midnight –
And moves almost straight towards Life.
Emily Dickinson
