Kitt Peak National Observatory image of Arp 336, also known as NGC 2685. NGC 2685 is a polar ring galaxy. It has a ring of gas, stars, and dust that orbits perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy, seen as unusual whorls, or helical filaments. These structures likely formed through an interaction which captured material from another galaxy. Hubble image of Arp 321, also known as Hickson 40. This group of galaxies include three spiral galaxies, an elliptical galaxy, and a lenticular (lens-like) galaxy. The group is so compact it could fit within a region of space that is less than twice the diameter of our Milky Way's disk. Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, A. So happy to have captured this — my best astro photo to date. This is, of course, the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor at a stone’s throw of 2.5 million light years away. You can also see M110 and M32, its two brightest satellite galaxies (out of a whopping 35 dwarf galaxies orbiting around it). Shot with a Dwarf 3 telescope under a starry Idaho night sky, which was stunning even with the naked eye. #photography #astronomy #astrophotography #galaxy #andromeda #dwarf3

Spitzer image of Arp 188, also known as the Tadpole Galaxy. The Tadpole is a result of a recent galactic interaction. A small intruder galaxy distorted the larger galaxy's shape, creating a 280,000 light-year-long tail of stars and gas. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/C.

Also Zeit genug zum Testen. 😀

APOD from 2012-12-20 M33: Triangulum #Galaxy The Triangulum Galaxy (M33), a face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Triangulum, is over 50,000 light-years wide and part of the Local Group. A satellite of Andromeda, it's 3 million light-years away. This image shows its blue star clusters and pink star-forming regions, with NGC 604 as its brightest. M33 helps measure cosmic distances.
