Chandra, Hubble, and JWST image of Arp 220, also known as IC 4553.
Arp 220 is actually two spiral galaxies in the process of merging. In this composite view, the hottest gas, which glows in X-rays, is shown in purple, overlayed on a Hubble and JWST visible and infrared light view of the merging galaxies.

Image of Arp 94, also known as NGC 3226 and NGC 3227, from the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies by Halton Arp (1966).
In the original catalog, it was in the category: Spiral galaxies - Elliptical companions. The large spiral galaxy, NGC 3227 is interacting with its elliptical galaxy companion, NGC 3226. Faint tidal streams of gas and dust link the pair, showing evidence of their mutual gravitational tugs.

Hubble image of Arp 283, also known as NGC 2798 and NGC 2799.
The left galaxy in this interacting pair, NGC 2799, is viewed edge-on. A bridge of star forming regions appears to connect it to its companion on the right, NGC 2798. NGC 2798 has two broad smooth spiral arms or tails without obvious clumps, made of mostly older, yellow stars.

M66 is a member of the Leo Triplet. This small group of galaxies consists of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3628 at upper left, and the nearly face-on spirals M66 at lower left and M65 at lower right.

Arp 302 consists of a pair of very gas-rich spiral galaxies in the early stages of interaction.
The Chandra data (pink) shows that the upper galaxy has an obscured, active supermassive black hole.

Subaru Telescope and Blackbird Observatory image of Arp 189, also known as NGC 4651 or the Umbrella Galaxy.
The galaxy gets its nickname from the parasol-shaped feature to the left. It is a stellar stream made of debris from a tiny galaxy, only a fiftieth its size, that was shredded apart by gravity as it fell into its larger companion.

NGC 2276 (left) is being pulled by the neighboring galaxy NGC 2300 (right). NGC 2276 is rich in new star formation along its spiral arms. The companion, NGC 2300, consists of aging yellow-white stars and lacks any spiral arm structure.

This image was taken in 2000 with Hubble's WFPC2 instrument to study the galaxies' hottest and brightest stars in ultraviolet light. Blue and green are ultraviolet, red is visible light. The observations show large amounts of interstellar dust in these merging galaxies.

Arp 219 appears in several catalogs of ring galaxies. The ring, made of tidal tails of material that wrap around the galaxy, was likely formed through interactions with a companion galaxy.
In this image, the luminosity comes from Hubble ACS/WFC observations, and color comes from PanSTARRS.

Spitzer, Hubble, and Chandra image of Arp 26, also known as M101 or the Pinwheel Galaxy.
In the infrared light Spitzer view we see a network of yellow-green of dust lanes. In the visible light Hubble view, the dust is dark and blue star clusters dot the spiral arms. In the X-ray Chandra view, we see million-degree gas, supernova remnants, neutron stars, and black holes.

Hubble image of Arp 142, also known as NGC 2936 and NGC 2937, or the Penguin and the Egg.
Gravitational interactions between the two galaxies warped the spiral's orderly disk. Gas and dust were compressed during the encounter, triggering star formation, visible as bluish knots of young stars along the distorted arms closest to the companion elliptical.

Hubble image of Arp 224, also known as NGC 3921.
NGC 3921 is a pair of interacting disk galaxies that are in the late stages of a merger. The history of this merger is recorded in the tails and loops that surround the center.
The galaxies were about the same mass and likely collided about 700 million years ago.
