This is mind-boggling… so little thought into cybersecurity consequences. That last sentence is doing so much heavy lifting, and could be considered obfuscating 🤯🤬 “EFTPOS NZ said biometric capabilities could be "deployed by retailers who wish to use biometrics, at a time frame that suits them and through their preferred supplier". The data "sits with their chosen consumer platform, governed by the same privacy regulations that apply to any other digital service", Kristy Gregory, head of merchant sales and strategic partners, told the New Zealand Herald.. Asked if there were valid privacy concerns around the tech, Young said there was "quite a lot of education and language that needs to be used so that everybody understands what it means".“ Those same privacy regulations and practices that have so far seen far too many breaches?! Those privacy regs? https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/837139/new-eftpos-terminals-remove-the-need-for-cards-or-phones #DataPrivacy #Biometrics #Eftpos #Verifone #Cybersecurity #InfoSec

Google and Meta both shipped facial recognition this week, days apart, for two different stated reasons — account recovery, catching AI catfish. Same instinct underneath: give us your face. https://blog.ppb1701.com/everyone-knows-your-face #bigtech #google #meta #privacy #biometrics #faceid #surveillance #userhostile #blog

humans who voluntarily choose to interact with their devices & online services via #biometrics have a way of viewing the world utterly foreign to me 😱🛑

"The US’s excessive demands for travellers’ profiling and surveillance in order to stay in its Visa Waiver Programme are nothing less than blackmail. The EU accepting the terms of this power struggle is extremely worrying for the rights of Europeans and any third country nationals registered in European databases. The scheme implies systematic transfers of biometric data and other highly sensitive and subjective “indications of risk” based on European national databases to the US government, which has shown a blatant disregard for basic human rights in its harsh and inhumane treatment of migrants and visitors. In that regard, the draft text does nothing to protect from discrimination based on political opinions, which is worrying because the US is already cracking down political dissent, including its unlawful practice of screening travellers’ social media profiles. The sharing of individual risk assessments to supposedly protect “public security and public order” under the EBSP could further target opposition to the Trump administration, support to transgender people’s rights or protests against the genocide in Gaza expressed (publicly) on social media, with potentially significant impacts, including detention at the borders. Furthermore it is very difficult to know the terms of the negotiations as the talks are shrouded in secrecy. However, in May 2026, EDRi member Statewatch leaked a “revised version” of the draft Framework Agreement, revealing the direction the future deal has taken." https://edri.org/our-work/the-eu-is-about-to-sell-our-most-sensitive-data-to-the-us-for-visa-free-travel/ #EU #USA #Surveillance #Biometrics #Privacy #DataProtection

Facial recognition scanners are turning up at airports, stadiums, and even Disneyland's gates. Most offer an opt-out, but few make it obvious. Before your next visit, check the venue's policy and look for the opt-out lane. #privacy #facialrecognition #biometrics #optout #indigoprivacy

“Google wants a look at your hands before it lets you through. The company’s newest reCAPTCHA check, rolling out now as a test, asks you to switch on your camera and wave at it so an algorithm can decide whether you’re a human or a bot. That wave is less casual than it looks. The system records a short video of your hand and pulls 21 hand-landmark coordinates from it, mapping your finger joints, your palm geometry, and the way you move in real time. Google describes the purpose as liveness detection, a way for websites to fend off automated account creation, credential-stuffing, and other fraud. But this is still a biometric scan, collected so you can prove you’re a person and still involves turning on your cameras for Google.” https://reclaimthenet.org/googles-new-recaptcha-wants-your-camera-access-and-21-points-of-your-hand #Google #ReCAPTCHA #Biometrics #Privacy

Google's new CAPTCHA asks you to wave at your camera. It records your hand movements, extracts 21 joint coordinates, then deletes the video. Google says it's safe. But normalizing camera checks for basic website access is a privacy line worth noticing. #privacy #captcha #google #biometrics #indigoprivacy

Someone mentioned in passing during a meeting in work today that "going passwordless is inevitable" and that using biometrics and facial scanning to sign in to accounts will be necessary. I work in the data protection office (the GDPR kind), so I'm begging please someone tell me this is not true.. 😩 #GDPR #DataProtection #biometrics #InfoSec

the arseholes over at #Meta / #Facebook aren’t clueless & naive techies, they’re actively pursuing harmful & unpopular tech in pursuit of money & power like cartoon villains… 🧐 Meta Plans to Add #FacialRecognition Technology to Its Smart Glasses “Five years ago, Facebook shut down the facial recognition system for tagging people in photos on its social network, saying it wanted to find “the right balance” for a technology that raises #privacy and legal concerns. Now it wants to bring facial recognition back. … Meta’s internal memo said the political tumult in the United States was good timing for the feature’s release. “We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many #CivilSociety groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns,” according to the document from Meta’s Reality Labs, which works on hardware including smart glasses.” https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/13/technology/meta-facial-recognition-smart-glasses.html #biometrics #USpol
