People often say the secret to job satisfaction is to get a career doing what you love. But quite often, if you really love doing something, the worst thing you could do is put yourself in a situation where someone else is paying you to let them tell you how, and on what terms, you get to do that thing.

I'm starting to realize programming is like that for me. I love doing it, but there isn't one piece of the rotten business of programming for hire I don't despise. Time to find something else.

@thomas_decker@mastodon.online I don't find it surprising. I think the whole "New Atheist" movement was just a bunch of people who really wanted religion but didn't like the options available, so they tried to start their own religion masked as anti-religion. Now that that movement is in tatters, it stands to reason they'd be in search of new gods.

Hey #fedihired #getfedihired I came across a job opening at #Wikimedia Foundation that I think I'd be a great candidate for. I've applied for jobs there before and didn't hear anything, so I'd like to ask if anyone on Fedi has experience applying there, and if there's anything specific they're looking for in a resume, cover letter, etc. Also good to know how likely it is that a human will read my application, or if ATS will eighty-six it because it didn't like the font on my resume or something.

@me@mastodon.seahousen.eu @emilymbender@dair-community.social If it makes you feel better, no, we haven't figured out how to turn words into numbers that "somehow encode the meaning behind it". There are no meanings in text, only more words. Without a ton of background information LLMs do not possess, words are nothing but arbitrary symbols. Things like word2vec only tell us what other words a given word tends to hang out next to.

Fediverse nomad (but without nomadic identity, sadly) roaming from server to server and software to software until I find something that just works. Developer of #python, #java, #go, #csharp, #fsharp, and, many years ago, #prolog. Interested in #retrocomputing, #permacomputing, and #solarpunk.

@h5e @rival_elf It would be the first I've ever heard of the dead being granted citizenship.

@h5e @rival_elf I am not a lawyer (or Canadian), but unless this confers citizenship posthumously and retroactively (which it doesn't appear to), it would require everyone in the chain of recursion who would newly gain citizenship to still be alive. If my great-great-grandfather were a Canadian citizen (according to the law at the time), but none of his descendants up to me were considered citizens during their lifetimes, and all died before this change, I wouldn't be a citizen. My dead great-grandfather wouldn't suddenly become a citizen, couldn't confer citizenship to my grandfather, and so on.

@rival_elf I've read the linked document and I don't see where it says that.

Okay, I think maybe it's time to give #FediHired a try. I'm a senior software engineer with 14 years of experience, based in the United States. Mostly back-end development and data engineering, with enough front-end experience to be dangerous. I'm most comfortable with Python but I've used Java, C#, PHP, and Go on the job, and off the job I've dabbled with more esoteric choices like F# and Prolog. I'm looking for a job because my current employer has begun enforcing a return-to-office mandate, and has also declared that we're going "AI-first" and intends to start mandating the use of Copilot. I would prefer a fully remote job, and I will not use LLMs of any kind, for any reason. Not "would prefer not to." Will not. I realize that this principled stand makes me nigh-unemployable in the current employment landscape. I'd be willing to take a serious pay cut to work for someone that doesn't force us to use planet-burning plagiarism machines. I don't even necessarily want a job in the tech industry; honestly, I'd probably prefer it if it wasn't. Does such a job exist in 2026? #getfedihired
