@jasongorman Thanks for the further hints, but this is not quite what I'm after. What I'm looking for is an artifact of whatever form that I can give to developers to make them see the strategic view of what a system is expected to evolve into. But it would have to be something that these people actually read willingly - and that's the real issue here.
I had some success in my current project by basically writing a book in Douglas-Adams-adjacent tonality, but that was too much work...

@jasongorman My problem with the kind of pictures typically used in this fashion might be autism-related: I think that they are really nice for giving a rough idea about the "what" and, in parts, the "how" - but they normally fail at explaining the "why", which for me is the most important question of all.
This is not a criticism of anything you said, I just fear that there's a lack of simple solutions for my specific problem. 😕

My current position is in architecture, closer to enterprise than solution architecture, actually. When software is created, there is an interplay of problem domain and architectural context which, in my experience, is often really hard to grasp for the developers because they are simply too close to the details.
I ask myself how to assist the devs in understanding that wider context.

@jasongorman Out of genuine interest: How do you deal with the big issue of defining what a new system should do in the very beginning of the project?
I do concur that 800 pages of bone-dry specification are a waste of time. But I've always struggled with the question of how to convey the big picture about a new system to people in the team who are working on details. I really think that it's bad if the entire team focuses completely on tactics instead of strategy.

I‘m just frustrated by the fact that this whole thing smells like the Middle East. Very few bad people manage to make very many normal people suffer, and the surrounding rhetoric makes reconciliation look less likely with every day that passes. It makes me sad.
