Got a mediocre grade in electromagnetic physics, which made me angry because my dad was an electrical engineer, and I knew I'd been exposed enough to pick up that stuff. Took an EE intro course and aced it, which made me realize that my ability to learn was affected by teaching methods.
I also separately learned that academia is its own entire bubble, and most of us are just passing through with a different end goal in mind, which can cause weird frictions.

@pl@cosocial.ca @cholling@bytes.programming.dev @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Linux is the only meaningful competitor to Apple and Microsoft OSes, and it's a niche thing that is mostly used for servers rather than by end users. It's also now subsidized by corporations because they use it as infrastructure.
Browsers on the other hand are an end user thing, so the value proposition of trying to break Google's (and to a lesser extent) Apple's hegemony is much different - especially since Google is also propping up Mozilla to suck even more oxygen.

Unfortunately Apple and Google ones share a common code ancestor, while Google and Mozilla ones are both funded by Google.

@troldann @caseyliss same here. Used community tools to clean up and create nfo files for my media so that kodi installs can build local databases as needed.
I don't see the need for on the fly transcoding in 2026 (which seems to be the main feature of Plex/Jellyfin?), as even cheap mobile devices seem capable at playing HD video now.

Having somewhere between 25 and 50 percent of the entire platform's active users on only one instance really runs counter to the idea of federation, and gives a lot of people a highly skewed impression of what the platform as a whole is like.

Without regulations, anything that makes number go up becomes duty, with no exceptions.
It's really weird to me that capitalists/libertarians can't see this as the inevitable outcome of their religion of greed.
