I didn't claim IPv6 is universal or that everyone has it. I claimed that all relevant devices support it, and it's just a matter of ISPs turning it on.
they're certainly running some flavor of BSD or Linux, which has supported IPv6 for forever. it's literally just a configuration error. a skill issue if you will.
the IPv8 draft reads as if IPv6 is nearly impossible to implement and nobody bothers. like IPv8 is better because it's a superset of IPv4 . you switch over and IPv4 keeps working. well guess what!!! you enable IPv6 and IPv4 also keeps working if you don't disable it!!!!!
there is no way IPv8 will ever make stubborn ISPs fix what is broken, when IPv6 is already universally supported and widely deployed.

hey so I know that to capture video over HDMI I need a capture card or such. and that makes sense. the HDMI ports on my GPU are absolutely not set up for receiving video.. instead, a capture card clones the video and sends it over USB, like a webcam.
but like. let's say I want to capture from a Nintendo Switch.. I'll have it docked into a USB-C dock and get HDMI out.
but what if there was no HDMI middleman?
why can't I just plug my Switch into my Linux computer, USB-C-to-C, and tell my Linux computer to pretend to be a monitor? Shouldn't I be able to get a video signal then, without a capture card? Obviously this doesn't work for things that directly expose HDMI or such. but I feel like it should be allowed for USB-C-only devices!!!

@memdmp@catgirl.center I think "hospital" is a decent one. from Latin "hospitale". in my native languages, we notably say "sjukhus", but according to Wiktionary, "hospital" is archaic Swedish, and any Norwegian speaker would recognize it from "Rikshospitalet" (a hospital), at the very least. it's also archaic German, and French calls it a "hôpital", which is close enough.
others have pointed out that travel accomodations are almost a universal language. taxi, hotel, etc. and yeah, it's not hard to see how those have an advantage in becoming loan words.
and of course, this is a bit of a cop out, but like, place names? notably, in Europe, "Europe"/"Europa"/"Evropa" all sound almost the same in every language. likewise, the Euro currency is pretty similar. really, *any" currency name is generally pretty standardized. talk about a "dollar" and almost all of Europe will probably assume you mean US dollars. at the very least, they'll understand that you mean currency. again, this is probably because of international trade and/or travel.
"police" is another contender. I reckon why this and "hospital" are so universal is because they are emergency services. everyone needs to be able to identify and contact them in a life-threatening situation. for police in particular, it's important to recognize them on the road if you're getting pulled over.
again, the common denominator for almost everything here is "Stuff That Tourists Frequently Interact With"
I feel like in the European languages i know, "cafe" and "restaurant" are pretty standard too. again, essential for any tourist to be able to identify. so, they have relatively standardized names.
notable exception to the tourist rule I guess: cars and trains are called anything in the languages I speak. "bil"/"Auto", "Zug"/"tåg". those sound nothing alike. but buses seem to have a pretty standard name. my hunch is that this has something to do with being part of traffic; there are bus lanes with markings that say "bus" or "buss". but car lanes don't say "car". they're just the default.
so I suppose the second, weaker criteria, is that tourists have to interact with it in writing. usually by reading.

apparently .ogg is a generic multimedia container and supports video?? what do you mean it's not just audio..I just converted a video to audio with ffmpeg, and opened the audio file to check if it plays, AND IT PLAYED THE VIDEO. FFMPEG ENCODED MY VIDEO AS A THEORA STREAM. AND IT LOOKS TERRIBLE

bad video game idea: the stereotypical trope of "omg everyone forgot your name pls enter it in the character creation screen during the opening scene" but it happens every time you meet a new character. you have to introduce yourself to everyone. you constantly need to re type your name. you can change it and have different identities in different parts of the game world. in one of the endings, you eventually get caught in a web of lies and everyone realizes that you've been responsible for like thirty major events that they all thought happened because of completely separate people.

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be how do you read them into like. a name. that you can easily search for and/or pronounce? idk take a chemistry class. the naming of molecules is an entire lecture or two with new conventions as you learn fancy new types of molecules. for a lot of the "linear" ones (with a chain of carbons and some stuff hanging off the side of each), you start in one end and just index each non-hydrogen attachment, ending with the name of the hydrocarbon that has that many carbon atoms (methane, ethane, butane, propane, pentane, hexane; first four are quirky). start in whichever end results in smaller indices I guess. how do you name each attachment? fuck if I know. I studied this shit and got an A but it's so painful to learn. "OH" is just the suffix "-nol". if the carbons make a ring you add the prefix "cyclo-" I think. if they make two or more rings you pray. if there are two carbon chains I think that's an ester so you concatenate them in lexical sorting order? if there are more chains then they didn't teach me this in school. if it's ever unambiguous to omit information, you always omit it. chemists are very ffic. never repeat yourself if the thing you're about to say can be deduced from prior information. this keeps names short and sudoku-like.
