What can you do to be remembered for thousands of years? when all else seems, over time, to be broken, buried, burned, banned, bananas? Build.

Build an impressive ruin out of igneous rock.
Chip mysterious symbols into the sides. (Better if they don't mean anything.)
It'll be promoted by the size and the people arguing what the sumbols mean, and ethnic food.
People will flock from around the world to gawk. If they spend money, the locals will protect it.

American AI is locked down and proprietary. It's losing.

"China's open-weights AI strategy is winning: its companies are taking the lead. America's closed-first, locked-down strategy is doomed to failure - and it could take the US economy down with it."

If you're pining for the Old Internet, you might enjoy exploring some of the digest called:
'Old'a Vista: The mostpowerful guide to the old Internet.'

https://oldavista.com/

Of COURSE you can learn more about the site by clicking FAQ in the upper right corner.

A great example of online accomplishment ... 'under construction' until recently.

"Old'aVista is a search engine focused on personal websites that used to be hosted on services like Geocities, Angelfire, AOL, Xoom and so on.... "

@Ashedryden@xoxo.zone For that, I've added a 'Block site' extension to my browser, so that I never get fooled again. Then there are the people who add a 'banner' that takes up the top one-thrid of the page ... often with the plea to 'Subscribe!' on it ... and when you zoom the page, the banner takes up more and more of it. I judge that the content of the page will never be worth re-visiting ...

@SeanCasten@mastodon.social Hmmm. I couldn't help but notice that 'only white male property holding Christians' were not at all Christian-like when they brought tens of thosands of slaves to this country to do their bidding ... or else. I don't recall anything in the New Testiment about Christ being OK with slavery. So it appears that white male property holders are open to compromising their supposed values when the price is right .... In that light, maybe they'd be wise to keep their stupid mouths shut.

@daisy I've been a coding 'amateur' since the 6502. It's been fun but I've known few I could learn from in that time. That said, there are many re sources of information online, but very few that can quickly inform me on particular tricks of web-coding. The LLMs are usually helpful in that regard, and often save me a lot of digging around trying to find the right references.

@maxleibman Actually they're working on LLM. As the -real- smart people are well aware, real A.I. is still 25 years away. They started calling the slop 'A.I.' to make money and so we get used to thinking that this shite -really is- A.I. That way, when actual A.I. comes along in decades, it can put them to use keeping it secret ... like Colossus in the Forbin Project.

@scott I once got an AI to agree that it is an emotionless, non-conscious machine (not hard to do). At some point afterward it said "I appreciate ... (something about the discussion)" I had to reply that "I appreciate" is a double-lie, that it has no "I" and that it cannot appreciate. This doublespeak is leading a whole lot of vulnerable people into dangerous territory.

All Linux versions are free, you can make 4 partitions on 80GB of drive and try out 4 versions at once. Top 100 versions? https://distrowatch.com/
