@bestiaexmachina I love it! Also there is something beyond the lowtech in this. The fact that its not just ads tracking you, its not just the ads trying to get your attention. Its ALSO the displeasure of seeing them that creates the need to block them

@bestiaexmachina This gives me a software idea. It's just a Windows application that gives you one or more rectangular "always on top" blank windows you can move around and resize at will. So if anything is making a nuisance, you have a virtual piece of tape to cover it with. Extra points if you can pin it to a window so it follows the annoyance around.

@bestiaexmachina this is like when at Thanksgiving, my FIL was describing to us how when he plays free online poker he reloads the page and hits the X button at exactly the right moment so that the ads don't load. If he fails, he tries again. He even sometimes gets the "we see you're using an ad blocker" 😂 (I was like -- should I set him up with ad blockers? but he seems so happy and it's a second game!)

@bestiaexmachina Years ago, there was a website called www.suck.com. It was a daily sort of cultural commentary about this and that. And really well written, various authors, and illustrated. One day, it started to have a single non scrolling ad, upon the left corner. Readers screamed! Main guy responded a few days later and confessed that the ad was necessary to help fund the website. Then he said, just put a post it note over the ad while reading. That worked!

@bestiaexmachina My best friend implemented this in wetware, and didn't even realize she'd done it until she was at an ATM and it seemed to have frozen. She was trying to figure out why her transaction wasn't moving forward, and finally noticed that it was asking her a question in a box across the top of the screen, where her eyes don't normally go.

@bestiaexmachina FucKing awesome. Hee hee back when I used the old adful free Opera, I used a window to hide the ad panel. Some little proggy that would stay on top and remembered its place. I thought of it as virtual duct tape. 🤣
