The world is shit in a lot of ways but there's pesto.

How chocolate is made, in case you're curious (a thread): Cacao grows within about 10° of the equator. The trees are WEIRD-looking small trees and the fruit kind of grows straight out of the trunk and large branches. Fruit growing out of a trunk looks very wrong to me but I have no complaints about the result. The fruit is a pod, shaped like and slightly smaller than an American football or rugby ball. Like so many other fruits, it contains a number of seeds, each with a thin shell of its...

Last weekend we had some friends over and made tacos, so there were still some stale corn tortillas, some shredded cabbage, some chili-lime black beans, and some chili-lime grilled pork in the fridge. We cut up onions and cherry peppers (Tom grew the peppers) and fried them until they were getting soft, added the torn up tortillas, then garlic, some mustard greens (that Tom also grew), and the shredded cabbage. Then some sliced up pork and the rest of the beans. For as "How do I use up...

We grilled on Sunday (brats and asparagus) so we did an eggplant and some onion and garlic while the grill was going so that tonight we could make baba ganoush with air fryer falafel and flatbread.

I ran past a construction site yesterday and I was really enjoying the art that they were displaying on the fence-covering material, when it suddenly occurred to me that we didn't used to have that. It used to only ever be dark green plastic mesh, and now it often still is but it's also not infrequent to see pictures or screen-printed art on the mesh, just because some institution doing the construction has decided it's better public relations if what everyone has to look at here for...

Look, I don't wanna speak ill of the dead, but I just wanna say that if you're concerned that maybe you might drink too much, or even if you're FINE everything's FINE but you know or suspect that maybe someone ELSE is concerned that maybe you might drink too much, just, chill out with that, huh? Have a ginger ale, maybe get into seltzer, they're everywhere these days. Your friends don't want to mourn you. Really.

I had a plan for dinner, I even set some lentils soaking in the fridge before I went to work, but as I was driving home it was just so strikingly beautiful out, such a PERFECT evening, that I got home and said, Hey, let's walk into Harvard Square and eat outside instead. We had a beautiful walk and held hands and saw some shirtless runners, went to Felipe's and it was DELICIOUS exactly the same as every other time we've gone there, and I have a cheesecake for later. (Cherry frangipa...

I have a #physics question and I hope maybe some nerd will be interested in taking up the challenge of explaining something to an (I like to think) intelligent layperson. A lot of stuff I read about dark matter seems to assume, implicitly or even explicitly, that it comprises particles that not only don't interact with the ones we're pretty sure about, but also don't interact with each other. Is this just Occam's Razor? 'Cause, I mean, everything we DO know about is *compli...

I once again feel the need to say explicitly that if it seems like I click the little star on like everything you ever post, it's not that I'm being a creep, you're just really cool and have interesting things to say.

RIP Taylor Kirk I guess, I didn't even know that they existed but "Timber Timbre" is, or I suppose now was, a really great name for a band.

I think I may have said, "Eh, it's just pain" more in the last two weeks than in the previous 57 years. But also this is really fucking old. I should say, though, that I reached out to the venue where we saw a show on Saturday, and they were awesome, they set up a stool for me right at the corner of the stage, I was prepared for the back wall but I got to sit right up front and seated-bop and wasn't in pain and it was glorious.

The thing I find most sobering about the relative density of various wildlife and biodiversity in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone compared to other areas with similar geography and history is that it tells us pretty clearly that the very presence of humans is worse for the ecosystem than a nuclear disaster. And not just worse, but, like, MUCH worse.

Suddenly today I was struck that it's funny we call it a "bus." It's short for "omnibus," which is a Latin word meaning "for all." The "all" is really the conceptually relevant part there, since it's common transportation rather than a personal vehicle, but that's the "omni." The -ibus part was just a suffix indicating the indirect object. It's rather as if we'd started calling them "for-alls," then eventually s...

If you supervise someone, and ESPECIALLY if you supervise someone really good, take this opportunity to ask yourself, "Have I told them lately that they're really good, or pointed out something that they did really well?" Maybe you do not need this reminder but I sure do, and I've had awesome people that I co-supervised express doubts that made clear that I had just *forgotten* to let them know they were awesome. I wanna talk a TINY bit about the health consequences of obesity. We don't know what they are! All of evidence-based Western medicine (which identified and quantified certain correlates of obesity in health metrics and outcomes) has happened in a fat-phobic society. People who have lost a LOT of weight have reported feeling bitter about suddenly being treated like human beings worthy of respect. Fat people suffer a lot of microaggressions! (…)

Someone wrote a blog post ranking all 54 songs on Hallelujah the Hills' album "DECK" and of course I'm going to read it OF COURSE I AM but here's the thing what if he's WRONG and ranks some songs higher than other songs that are clearly better? Folks, I'm not okay. I'm really not recovered from yesterday's Bad Day At Work, and I have to go back and cannot see where the motivation for that is supposed to come from, and then I just got some bad news that friends are gonna divorce and I was … not ready for it. And then there's the whole fascism thing. I'm kinda spiraling a little.
