I suppose if I'd 'done my research' I wouldn't be surprised, but, I didn't and I'm now very sad. I just started a book (Black Diamond from 2025) by Neal Asher, who has been a favourite spec-fic author for years. The dedication page up front is a gushing nose-up-the-bum peon to Elon full of thanks and tributes. Damn, I thought someone who writes about dystopian worlds for a living would be more 'in touch' than that. Sheesh. So do...

Chatting with my Irish friend and we got 'refreshed' and talked about toasts we've heard in a pub His first was "may you be in Heaven a good half hour before the Devil knows you're dead" My own was from my Grandad, who's toast was "here's to those that wish us well, and those that don't can go to Hell!" His last one hit a bit hard - "may you never forget what is worth remembering, nor ever rem...

Good grief. Just this week, if I fire up LibreOffice (I'm on Garuda Linux), particularly the 'Writer' to edit a doc? I get no title-bar with the 'decorations' for minimise, normalise, quit. It always starts full-screen, and I cannot drag it out of that. Various searches have told me to try various things, none of which change the behaviour - all I can do after starting it is Alt-F4 out of it, which is not good. Oh and yes, I deleted the folder undernea...

Sigh. Literally everyone with an online presence wants 'affirmation' these days. Usually it's somone like Royal Mail going "yay! We delivered your parcel. How did we do?!" To which the only real response is "well, you had this ONE job..." Latest one from my GPs practice is weirder. "Thinking about your recent appointment at blah Surgery. How was your experience...?" I'm thinking, "well I'm st...

OK, help me out here, lovely Fedi people! I'm watching/listening to a child ( (30yrs old-ish!) trying to tell me all about The Eagles playing _Take It Easy_. Now, does ANYONE on here actually have a photo of 'that corner in Wi[mn]slow Arizona" where yer man is waiting for a lift, and then gets a lift from 'a girl my Lord, in a flat-bed Ford...' etc If you have a real photo of that location, then thank you, whoever you are, and I shall love you forever!

I don't recall if I've bigged this chap up here before. If I have, then forgive me, please. There are a few YT channels where people 'tell stories', but this bloke seems to have that indefinable thing that makes him, to me, 'a Bard'. Tells a good tale, does yer man. https://youtu.be/KDkIWTgXJrs Edited to add this one as well. https://youtu.be/L7E4c-ThofY

What was the 'rock track' that mentioned in the lyrics, "....and the inevitable pin-hole burns, all down the front of my favourite satin shirt"...? In my head it's a Floyd thing, but I really cannot find it tonight! Thanks!

Boo! I have a soundbar thingie that used to give me noise off the TV. I no longer own a TV device, so obvs wanted to use the soundbar for my laptop, but sadly said laptop has no 'optical' port. Sigh. I'm going to have to go Bluetooth, and unpair the existing speakers, being careful not to unpair my bloody phone and headphones, then try and get laptop to pair to device number 3, i.e. the soundbar. Anyone who is slightly less hot and stressed and probably a teensy bit le...

Chap in the pub watching the Wombledon thing. He just said "I don't understand why the boys have a pocket for the 'second serve' ball, but the girls tuck that spare ball under their skirt." Young woman at the bar just did an eye-roll and said "young man, you have *no* idea!" Maybe Count Binface might consider making "pockets for all" an election pledge! #Pockets

OK, code geeks - way back when I was freelancing (20-noughties), I used a tool called 'purify' as a C compiler preprocessor, and it could spot buffer overruns (and much more, but those were the biggies for what we were doing at the time). Later (couple of decades?) 'purify' was gone having been, I think bought out by IBM and then killed? Anyway, later, there was a tool called 'valgrind', which I never got along with, and maybe could have done this, but the learning curv...

New YT channel to me here. Their 'comments' section mentions nothing about AI. But having watched, IMO (of course!) either the vid is AI, or the voice-over is AI, really - or perhaps both. I like it when people fess-up to this, bcs it helps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAXY8cX9_ss And me? If they do fess up, and say 'audio is AI-created', I'm cool with that because inclusion. But if the vid itself is 'AI-created', I'm never...

Okay, my friend and I were earlier chatting in the pub. I'm home now, and fed, thank you. We somehow got onto talking about films, then Sean Connery films, and on and on about the ones we liked and the ones we didn't, and then at some point he went "You need to watch Zardoz!" Now. Lovely people in the Fedi.
