I don't know about all the discussion about doors, but I feel the same way about us trying to shoehorn the "Scandinavian model" or "Norwegian model" into our correctional model here. Ain't gonna work. Different culture, different population, and I could probably write thousands of words but it wouldn't make a difference. All that to say i appreciate your position from the other side, and hope you can run as far away from us as possible until there are some serious changes made.

Even we, living in Slovenia (which is probably seen as 3rd world country for USians) have almost everything you mentioned + a bit warmer weather, why the hell should we look up to US (in relation to quality of life)? We are being lied to by grifters or what.

@janeishly@beige.party I agree 100%. I live in Finland, and we're in the exact same situation. Our right wing parties have a pathetic love affair with US Republicans and UK Torys, and want to turn our Nordic social democracy into a miserable dystopia, because they think they'd be richer in one.

@janeishly@beige.party I'm pretty sure the push to make Europe more like the US ultimately comes from billionaires, who promote the US form of "freedom" where that the rich get low taxes and everyone else gets poor public services. Having said that, there are many parts of the US where you can leave your car unlocked. I rarely lock mine. I once left my wallet on the passenger seat of my car, ON MAIN ST, with the window open, and no one touched it. I've had my bike outside the house unlocked for years.

@janeishly@beige.party To put that into even more perspective - although European car theft rates are not high the Chinese EV makers had to add additional protection when exporting because our car theft rates are horrific by Chinese standards, where it's a rare event indeed.

@janeishly@beige.party I think the real answer is that the USA used to be much closer to Sweden than it has been recently. We used to provide assistance to most of the Western countries. Even when Putin invaded Ukraine, the US joined in coalition with European allies to address that threat. You are, of course, correct that the systems of government, and the services they provide, come from very different viewpoints. We've done Putin's job for him. When the Kremlin's happy, you know you're wrong.

@janeishly@beige.party I long believed that the USA and Europeans had a lot in common. The first election of Trump came as a big surprise and only then I started to take a good look at American culture and values. Coming to the conclusion that real USA culture, values and whatnot are as foreign to Europeans als say, Chinese or Japanese culture. We are nowhere near 'almost the same'.

Years ago my beloved grandmother would tell us how lucky we were to be born in the U.S. I'm glad she's not around to see the state of the country her brother fought for in WW II. Carry on, Europe. And know this American holds no animosity towards you for having to do what you must to secure your own stability, prosperity, and safety. I will be rooting for you. Maybe we can repair our relationship when America emerges from this darkness. We'll be beat up and battered, but my hope is we find the road to redemption on the world stage. It really does seem to be some section of our society which is broken, but perhaps living in the mountains we dont' see it as much.

We don't want them. But we have no way of getting rid of them. The barking dog in the White House was not elected by the people. Money put him there. We lack the will to do what is required to remove him because money lies to us and says it can get better, but it never does, and it never will. Don't change to be like us. Learn why we have fallen so far and take steps to make sure it doesn't happen to you. There are no jobs here. There is no way to flee. We cannot save ourselves. Save yourselves from what happened to us.

They just haven't been able to get it. As in every country this is infected with them, the problem is the conservatives. They want every good thing for themselves, but none of it for their neighbor. So weird!

Maybe not the Swedes, but the current resurgence of white supremacist trans-Atlanticism is, and has always been, about race and shared racial identity between white North Americans and Western Europeans, not just culture or “way of life” per se … also a penchant for violence. Ironically, this civilizational hysteria now includes Slavs, Jews and others. Ie both #Hungary and #Israel evoke their role as gatekeepers.

You never cared about the people who live where you take resources from. If you want to be consistent, let everyone have a garden — then you wouldn't need to label every nation defending its future as an authoritarian regime.

When I was a teen in high school, m'y dream was to be able to go to the USA and study at the MIT. I turned 18, got the right to vote and got interested in politics. The american dream crumbled fairly quickly... I travelled to the USA, met very nice people and also less savoury ones, admired nature, hated big cities, and never had any wish to stay longer. With the current situation I've warned my boss that I'm no longer going to business trips in the USA euther.

I'm in Portugal, I get to hear the racism and Islamophobia almost daily.
