  I just did something I think will be very good for my mental health. I used @ birb @rss-parrot.net (I added spaces here to avoid triggering the bot) to create Mastodon feeds from three good news websites, created a list from them, and then pinned that list on the mastodon website so that it appears as a column. Now I have a column that saves my sanity. The three feeds are: @www.goodnewsnetwork.org@rss-parrot.net @www.onlygoodnewsdaily.com.home@rss-parrot.net @www.positive.news@rss-parrot.net

  I just finished reading "This Is An Uprising" by brothers Mark Engler and Paul Englar. For a heavily-footnoted non-fiction book I have to say it was often thrilling. It tells the story of the rise and rise of nonviolent resistance, details its successes and some of its failures, and explaining what makes the difference. It goes a long way to being a "how to topple a dictator" manual, and for obvious reasons I think we've going to need it. HIGHLY recommended.

  I'm two thirds of the way through the first episode of Widow's Bay, and my main thought is what a waste of talent it is to have a fine actor like Matthew Rhys in it. I don't bore easily while watching TV, but I am SO bored. I imagine it must get better since it's been nominated for 19 Emmys, but I absolutely cannot bring myself to continue with it.

  Imagine you're a visually impaired Mastodon user and your screen reader encounters a post that says something like "A stunning view I saw this morning" or "This is hilarious." But the image is the equivalent of what you see below: a blank. Wouldn't it be frustrating to encounter post after post like that? Describe images. It's an act of love. Describe them as you would to a dear friend you were talking to on the phone.

  I have a horrible feeling that a lot of people look at forest fires, floods, record heatwaves, etc., and think, "This is how it's going to be from now on." It's not. We're still pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, where it's accumulating. The future is going to be much, much worse. Unless we take drastic action now.
