Some days I wonder how many resources we could save if we instead taught people some basic understanding of safety. All those manuals that start with 35 pages of "do not attempt to eat your router", "do not place product in the microwave", "do not operate in a room filled with petrol vapour" could be so much smaller. I mean it's not like the kind of people who try and eat their router actually read the manual in the first place anyway.

Canada should plant extensive cannabis groves in high fire risk areas near the US border. It won't stop the smoke but the USAians will be a bit more chill when it happens

I was trying to put together a summary of why #AI code s banned from Fuzix Having thought about it a bit I realised it can be put several ways but it really already been said by Marx (and Engels), and to be fair also the same basic beliefs in many other groups: "The workers should own the means of production" LLM #AI, aside from all the stolen content and environmental damage is not owned by the workers. It's no different to depending upon an proprietary compiler someone can tak...

This is your periodic reminder that all the code you browse via the web UI of something like a #git repository doesn't necessarily match what you get via a git clone. In fact it's really easy to serve a trojan that's only in the git clone view so if you need to inspect code do it on the pulled copy. Of course I can also only serve the trojan version to selected IP ranges matching a given corporation too. Isn't supply chain trust fun !

More baby steps on UK plug in #solar Core of the interim standard is basically DIN VDE V0126-95 with tweaks for the UK. Max 800W per house, doesn't yet cover batteries but otherwise really isn't terribly interesting. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a31167d15f2a70fac7e6026/plug-in-solar-interim-product-specification.pdf

Bought some sausages with a big picture of Jamie Oliver on the front. On the back it says "prick with a fork". Nice of them to add a label to the picture for anyone using a screen reader.

A Halloween Horror Story: "We're in and we've broken containment - we really are living in a virtual universe" "That near endless string of symbols is our universe" "Yes" "But why one giant string of noise ?" "Is that a regexp... ?" "Oh my god, we're living in a perl one liner!"

Whenever some politician or party apologist whines about having to stay on twitter because some of our potential voters are on twitter, remind them that probably even more of their potential voters are on pornhub but they are not active there.

If anyone is involved in the UK #Green Party they might want to look at motion A6 for the spring conference which includes "The Green Party supports users’ rights to control the digital devices they own, including the right to install, modify or replace operating systems and software, access full file systems, and remove pre-installed applications, particularly on computers and smartphones." and some amendment discussions around @pluralistic@mamot.fr proposals on killing DRM and...

@cliffle@hachyderm.io @b0rk@social.jvns.ca A bit of advice I was given long ago when someone proposes doing something apparently dumb and which has been tried before is never to say "that doesn't work" or "we've tried" but to always say "This is what we couldn't figure out last time" They now know where you came unstuck and can see if they have answers, they know what to think about if they've not got that far, and you've not stopped them if the...

@iamlayer8@mastodon.social @rootwyrm@weird.autos @cstross@wandering.shop @Photo55@mastodon.social The current US administration clearly wants it. It lets them crash the dollar and it helps their Russian pals. It doesn't really matter if the US people staplegun the entire political establishment and judiciary to trees the damage is done and with the resulting crash of oil and the unsustainability of US industry and food production it's going to be a very long road to rebuilding. On the b...
