@mms I'm considering moving my main desktop to FreeBSD. I am quite happy with OpenBSD, but there are just some things which I do all the time that don't work (out of the box) with OBSD. For example, I just digitized another book. And the main tool for that is "Scantailor". This is a port for FBSD, but not for OBSD. There are others, but you get the point. FBSD and OBSD have enough differences that I've tried to just stick with one. But I may need to ch...

Vladimir Putin has the easiest job in the world right now. Just sit back and watch Donald "J for Jenious" Trump split NATO, remove US troops from Europe, make it much harder to force-project in opposition to Russia's plans, and destroy the Western economy. While Xi watches Putin, knowing how weak Russia is. Just a matter of time, now...

People will think I'm weird for enthusing over the design of a toaster. But let them. Designed by the son of Czech immigrants, the Sunbeam T-20 is a marvel. You have to heat the bread, right? He harnessed that heating element to move the toast in and out of the machine. Then he used a thermostat so it toasted to a specified _temperature_, not a specified time (as modern ones do). So simple that the only things which can go wrong have adjustments so you can correct them. Genius!

"Automatic Beyond Belief" It surely is. And so much great engineering went into such a simple appliance. In production from 1949 until 1997, with a brief reboot in Australia in the early 2000's. The phrase, "they don't make 'em like they used to" is an understatement for this humble toaster.

Today I learned that the Macbook Neo, which is selling like hotcakes, is based around _defective_ CPUs. Some smart person at Apple saw they were about to scrap a bunch of CPUs because they wouldn't run above a certain speed. So they proposed just building a cheap laptop with them, and run it at that lower speed. Apple can't fill orders fast enough, and has run out of "defective" chips.

I know it's the end of Girl Scout Cookie Season, but I wanted to share the work being done by New York City Troop 6000. This troop was specifically formed to provide scouting opportunities to girls living in shelters. This is truly humans at their best. You can buy cookies from them online, although that's likely about over. But they help girls all year round, and have ways beyond cookies for you to help them as well. Please consider this.

Did I mention that one of my all-time favorite RAH novels, The Door Into Summer, was made into a movie? I was able to watch it online, but had to hit ebay to find a proper DVD. They did a *really* good job with this. If all book-to-movie translations were done this well, we'd have a lot more great movies. And none of them licensed from Marvel... @mms @mwl
