The idealized version of Sweden you are presenting has no Sweden Democrats. You are talking about a fictional liberal Sweden, when in fact, it was never de-Nazifiied after WWII, unlike Norway. see: Internment camps in Sweden during World War II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internment_camps_in_Sweden_during_World_War_II Statens institut för rasbiologi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Institute_for_Racial_Biology @janeishly@beige.party

@hhardy01@mastodon.social Yeah, I am aware of history, thanks (I was born in the UK - you think I'm not furious about Sweden's part in WWII?) And I never said that Sweden was perfect now. It's very much not, and SD are just part of that. But it's a lot better than the US and we should be focusing on that difference and trying to make it greater, not trying to swerve madly down the path they're blazing.

@hhardy01@mastodon.social Every time I say "Europeans, and the northern European countries in particular, seem to be doing a great job taking care of their citizens, maybe there's something we could learn from them" immediately people bring up racism exactly like this. The complaint comes from left, right, and political center, and instantly. But we have that problem too! We have hundreds of years of racism and genocide, still mostly unresolved. I don't understand how so many of my fellow citizens won't even consider the possibility that there might be a better way to do things, and why the argument against looking outwards is always the darkest part of our history. @janeishly@beige.party
