Yet more of capitalism pretending to be environmentally friendly. "Half sheets" of kitchen roll are actually more like 2/3 of a sheet, and you always take two because half a sheet isn't enough. So now we're using MORE than we were before they forced this stupid change onto us (at least in Sweden it's almost impossible to find the full sized sheets any more). #CapitalismKills #Environment

@benc@mastodon.hawaga.org.uk @RockyC@fosstodon.org Yeah, I got that only for Swedish. Funny how some of the people online are *immigrants*. Sigh.

Do we have any camera nerds out there? I've got two Nikon 1s (don't snigger, I love them) and they're both unusable at the moment - one has an unpleasantly terminal dark red screen when fired up, the other one objected to me inserting the wireless adapter the other day for the first time in several years and is now insisting that the clock has been reset, but won't let me actually reset it. I haven't got either the money or the desire to replace them (I've got several of...

Other Kagi users, you'll want to turn off the revolting "Summarize" option on search (click the three dots next to the share button on any search page and hit the slider). #noAI #Kagi

Well this is pretty worrying, not only for the vast swathe of Europe that will be too hot to produce food, but also for the rest of it, which is largely currently supplied with food by those red bits. https://www.euronews.com/2026/07/16/interactive-map-predicts-climate-driven-farm-decline-by-end-of-century

I am absolutely fucking SICK of all the unpaid work required to simply exist in the techno-hell that is 2026. I've just spent half an hour trying to take a photograph of my passport that Wise.com will accept – to no avail. They now want me to do something involving live photographs of myself and my passport using my smartphone. JUST FUCK OFF. Let's just let the money launderers do whatever they want, eh? Let the mysterious people who might want to pay my bills do so. Let the people who...

I have actually worked for @mullvadnet@mastodon.online a couple of times, translating their book about why data privacy is so important and why Chat Control is an absolutely terrible idea. The people I worked with were lovely. But they weren't the CEO, who, presumably, would have thrown up his hands at the thought of paying me, an immigrant to Sweden. (Or is it only brown people who aren't allowed to pollute Swedish soil?) Either way, I'm sorry for the non-racist people working ther...

Random question - do I know anyone on #LundUniversity teaching staff who'd like to rent a largeish house in the countryside between Kristianstad and Hörby? About 40 minutes' drive to campus, 30 minutes to the Åhus coast.

Very very unlikely, but is anyone else out there going to see #BRUIT in Copenhagen tonight? I've been wanting to see them for aaaaages, but now it's come to it the logistics are quite difficult and I'm wondering whether I should just not go. Having someone to hang out with would really help! #loppen #Copenhagen #København #LiveMusic

I've been doing this for some time now, but it occurs to me that maybe other people aren't. Every time you get the chance, every time you're discussing how awful things are with anyone, in any context, bring it back to how the super rich are sucking us dry and how they can never be satisfied. Not only because it's true, but because we all need *everyone* to recognise that the entire planet (and not just every human) is being held hostage by the bottomless thirst...

So let me get this straight. Companies having replaced their human customer support staff with an AI chatbot (an insult to both their customers and employees in so many ways) can be forced to pay massively over the odds for said AI by people asking it to do things like "reverse a linked list in Python"? I wonder what other examples could be used to do such a thing? Just so I can avoid doing it, obviously. https://www.cio.com/article/4155404/ai-token-freeloaders-are-coming-for...

Yay! @kagihq have provided a URL where you can continue to use their "1996-style" search as your home page. It's so nice to have a bit of colour and human interaction there. "Small Web" has already become a favourite after just a few days. So many great, mad, creative websites to browse! https://kagi.com/?year=1996

Because I'm terrible at marketing myself (or alternatively that I don't view tdov as an excuse to try to do business) I haven't even thought to talk today about a translation of mine that's just been published. But I'm really proud of this, and actually some of you might enjoy reading about Eva-Lisa, a Swedish transgender pioneer who played a really important role in establishing the LGBTQIA+ movement in Sweden. This bit is about her childhood but there ar...

I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like "I've been online for longer than the internet. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. 56k modems on fire in the light of Usenet. I watched IRC forks glitter in the dark near the Gateway 3000. All those moments will be lost in slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify.&q...

If you like music and/or coding, or indeed have never been much into either, you need #algorave It's like cooking a communal meal where none of you know what it's going to be, but most of the fun is trying out the weird combinations of flavours and just being in the kitchen stirring the pan with other people – even if you're using an internet spoon to do it with. Here's a fantastic explanation by @TodePond of what it is and why it's important in an age w...

I live in a small town in Sweden. This morning I went out to my car (realising that I'd once again forgotten to lock the front door last night), drove along empty, wide roads to the nearest largeish town and parked in the brand new multistorey carpark by the railway station, where the first two hours' parking is free and the remainder of the time is very cheap. I got out of the car without checking my surroundings, and as I leaned back in to get my bag out, I thought "In large part...
