Just two examples of what I am dealing with on that other “social” network I sadly need to be a member of. This is gay people trying to eradicate trans people from queer history — while apparently also appointing themselves the Supreme Court of what “normal-looking” gay men and lesbians are. 🙄 And yes, history has an ugly little lesson here. In the Weimar Republic, there were gay men who were deeply attracted to nationalist and later Nazi ideology, including people who were quite happy to distinguish themselves from the “wrong sort” of queer people. Respectability, conformity and throwing other queer people under the bus did not make them safe. It did not save them. So when I see queer people trying to scrub trans people out of Stonewall, Pride and the history of our liberation, I pay attention. Because this isn't merely about the past. They want to erase us from history because they want to erase us from reality. And finally, can we talk about the “kiddo”, “child”, “babe” routine? A grown man disagreeing with a grown person and immediately reaching for infantilising language to establish dominance is not exactly a revolutionary new contribution to human civilisation. Stormé DeLarverie fought the police outside the Stonewall Inn. Casa Susanna opened in the Catskills so trans women could live openly for a weekend. Vito Russo counted a century of erased queer film and published the count. Every one of them was told they were the wrong person, in the wrong room, at the wrong moment. Sandy Ernest Allen drove across the Catskills this year looking for Casa Susanna, the guesthouse where transfeminine people gathered through the '50s and '60s for twenty-five dollars a weekend. He found new construction. Hedges in burlap where the old trees stood. No plaque of any kind. What he had instead was his own living room, full of trans and queer neighbors eating cookies — gatherings he started after the 2025 inauguration for no better reason than that people needed somewhere to be. The house was the smaller half. The gathering is the part that survived, and it survived by being taken apart and rebuilt in a different county by a man who never met her and knew her only from photographs somebody found at a flea market. Susanna Valenti ran an entire guesthouse. I run a kitchen table in Georgia. It counts. This one is kept standing by readers. Above a Manhattan brothel in 1895, a handful of people met in secret and called themselves the Cercle Hermaphroditos — the earliest known trans advocacy group in the country. They gathered to defend one plain thing: the right to dress as we please. The century gave them no room. They met anyway. 21 years later trans people in DC don't have to worry about being denied medical care, we have housing and work protections. Current council races have issues like providing housing credit to trans people because we are disproportionately unhoused. It's not perfect, but Tyra Hunter's death moved public opinion in favor of trans protection. #TransHistory #pride

Her family filed suit against the ambulance and hospital (dead naming and misgendering her in the court filings), and the people and institutions that killed her were found at fault and fined millions of dollars. But it didn't stop there. Trans advocates moved to make sure this never happened again, pressuring the DC city council to pass medical protections for trans people. #TransHistory #Pride

In 1995 Tyra Hunter was on her way to work as a hairdresser, when she was in a car accident. It was serious but not life threatening. When the EMTs arrived, they removed her from her car and begain treating her. They started to remove her clothes in order to access her wounds, and found she was trans. They stopped treating her, and instead started to verbally abuse her and calling her slurs. #TransHistory #Pride

Eventually they did load her into an ambulance and took her to a hospital. At the hospital the abuse continued when the surgeon in the ER refused to care for her as well. An hour after her car accident she was declared dead. An investigation into her death said that with proper medical care she had a 90% chance of survival. Tyra Hunter was murdered. #TransHistory #Pride

I've probably mentioned before that DC is the most trans city in the US. 1 in 33 residents identify as trans. And the reason for that is that DC has a lot of protections for trans people, and has for a few decades. This makes it an easy choice for trans people across the country to move here and live their authentic lives. For pride this year, I want to talk about how some of this came to be.
