Il Fatto Quotidiano: Droni sconfinati in Lituania, il governo: “I rifugi antierei restino aperti 24 ore su 24” Sono ancora in corso le ricerche del drone sconfinato il 20 maggio nella regione sudorientale della Lituania e in conseguenza del quale la popolazione della contea di Vilnius era stata invitata a raggiungere i rifugi antiaerei. E alla luce di quanto accaduto, la prima ministra lituana, Inga Ruginiene, ha annunciato, al termine della seduta del Consiglio supremo della Difesa, che l’esecutivo intende chiedere alle amministrazioni provinciali del Paese di provvedere all’apertura 24 ore su 24 dei bunker del Paese. Secondo Ruginiene, il provvedimento è reso necessario dalla possibile intensificazione degli sconfinamenti di droni ucraini nel territorio lituano, proprio come accaduto il 20 maggio. La premier ha inoltre annunciato che i radar presenti in Lituania saranno integrati in un sistema comune in grado di controllare unitariamente lo spazio aereo del Paese entro la fine dell’estate di quest’anno. While the world watches Iran, NATO is quietly completing a fundamental transformation of its eastern flank. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are becoming the Alliance's most fortified frontier since the Cold War. The strategic shift began after 2022. NATO moved from forward basing—small battalion groups as a political signal—to genuine combat readiness. Forces sufficient not merely for delay but for full-scale deterrence. Poland leads with East Shield, a 700-kilometer network of fortifications, engineering barriers, and surveillance systems along the Russian and Belarusian borders. Budget: $2.5 billion. Timeline: 2025-2028. In April 2026, German engineering units began supporting construction. This is the first peacetime Bundeswehr deployment to Poland in this format. The symbolism is striking: the country that started World War II by invading Poland is now physically building its defensive network. Lithuania hosts the first permanently deployed foreign brigade in its history. A full German brigade, approximately 2,000 troops, integrated with local forces. This is not rotational. These are known names, known families—people whose deaths would be immediate consequences of any aggression. Latvia hosts a Canadian brigade of 2,200 personnel, the largest Canadian contingent outside North America since World War II. Estonia hosts a British battle group with Challenger 2 tanks and support units. The most vulnerable point remains the Suwalki corridor: 104 kilometers of border between Poland and Lithuania separating Belarus from Kaliningrad. In a hypothetical conflict, this is where Russia could attempt to cut off the Baltic states from the rest of NATO by land. Fortifying this corridor has become a priority for 2025-2027. This transformation is one of the least covered but most important geopolitical developments of 2026.
