Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim. The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below. And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers... It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds. I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan. Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze! So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...) Schon lange habe ich mir überlegt, von Mac zu Linux zu wechseln. Vieles musste vorbereitet und getestet werden. Und dann galt es noch ein gutes Notebook zu finden. Heute habe ich nun ein Asus ExpertBook P5 bestellt und freue mich nun sehr, es dann bald schon in Betrieb zu nehmen. Kennt jemand ne Person/ne Stelle in Berlin wo man nen AM4 Mainboard/CPU testen kann? Mein PC geht seit paar Tagen nicht mehr an, laut Status LED beim CPU Initialisieren. CPU neu einsetzen, anderer RAM/nur einzelne Slots, Mainboard Batterie raus rein, BIOS neu flaschen. Alles nicht geholfen, bleibt beier CPU Status LED hängen... und würde gerne wissen ob wirklich mein Ryzen 3900 einfach so aufgegeben hat oder mein Asus B550 Mainboard :/ Oder wer noch Tips? #PC #reperatur #repaircafe #TechSupport #AMD #Asus

So I don't know why both cases cracked themselves open, but they both did. Both cases show other heat stress, on the tops. This wasn't environmental, as these were indoors in climate controlled spaces. But the actual hardware is getting pretty warm, even with cases off, and the case ventilation is poor. Node 2 has been running most of the day. I guess I'll let it keep going while Node 3 runs for a day and just see what happens. But I do think these cases need a lot more venting. I have drills and no one will stop me. I wonder if OpenWRT will run on these things. That might be nice. #diy #repair #wifi #asus

Whelp I've got these old ASUS nodes running; so far the only thing I've found for sure is that node 2 had a broken antenna cable (now repaired) and now they're all working. I'm wondering whether on site the broken antenna - which critically may be is the backhaul antenna - had been installed improperly but had not fully broken _until_ the node 2 case somehow opened itself right next to that antenna cable. Maybe that finished the cable off, tearing it. I don't know. (Meanwhile, in node 3, which also opened its own case somehow, the same cable was bent up a bit and kind of wedged into the area where the case separated. that cable is, however, intact.) #diy #repair #wifi #asus

Why would these thermal pads be... wet this does not seem right. is this a breakdown mode of some thermal pads? Or is it something else entirely, or even by design? (This device powers up and behaves normally until it doesn't, at which point it flashes its one LED continuously. It feels like overheating, but since it just disappears offline, it's hard to tell.) #tech #repair #diy #asus #wifi #router
