To complete the concept, while servers generally retain IPs often for security and/or debugging purposes, profiling is totally another beast, and very few services are able to use such information within recommending systems or other machine learning engines. One of the few is surely Google, but most of the hyperscalers can, and probably already do.

It is not trivial understanding if/how this information is relevant.

Most users currently navigate by using dynamic IPs and often CGNAT, so that in practice, it is tracked the network (and country) a user belongs to, IFF they are not using a VPN/proxy. Such information is already spread among millions of server logs in any case, often linked to specific credentials and IDs.

@EvenRouault@mastodon.social We should all recognize the existence and dignity of the 'good enough' code: code that works enough as is, is maintained enough, and does not need big evolutions. They often call that a dead-end code, but I disagree. It is simply good enough for its purpose, and fuck the majority.

There are many illnesses out there that are very difficult to diagnose, and often the average doctor labels such illnesses as anxiety.

@Vive_Levant@masto.bike @Emmaf_77@piaille.fr @Ashedryden@xoxo.zone Yes, in my experience, it is not a genre issue but an attitude toward giving explanations to patients, right or wrong, in any case, with or without a founded diagnosis. It seems an admission of limited/inadequate skills/information is a social stigma for medical professionals. A simple 'I have no idea, sorry' is not admitted.

"This is what it looks like when an OEM stops treating Linux support as an afterthought and starts treating it as engineering. Not a checkbox on a spec sheet. Not a “works with Linux” footnote. Actual kernel work, actual upstream contributions, actual collaboration with the people building the tools developers use every day and helping the Linux community as a whole."

@Enalys The usual approach is using a containerized approach, BUT that changes exactly nothing, because even containers need upgrades, and at a certain point in time, you are fucked in any case. After 30 years, I have become quite choosy about computing choices based on the expected life cycle... Today, I tend to deprecate the use of frameworks and warn 'ex ante' about languages that are expected to fail by design.

It definitely depends on tasks and the level of competence of those using such tools. It can be a good starting point, not a refined result that requires skills, labor, and judgment altogether.

@hongminhee @mitsuhiko @antirez I would also note that, currently, the extension of copyright protection to AI-generated works remains an open question, and the US side of the common law does not consider them even copyrightable without a significative human contribution (no, prompts do not count). So, every shot to the copyleft has its consequences I would say. The whole matter is quite complicated and questionable.

@hongminhee @mitsuhiko @antirez It is technically legal, but note that it took ages to create a legal framework fully accepted for a lot of products of creativity that were fully accepted by all parties. And still there were corners in the rights not fully understood. Even, note that the white room reimplementation has been only a technical trick to enforce the safety of a reimplementation, not a strict legal requirement. For the future, who knows?

@mjg59 Another well-known past 'democratization' of programming has been the spreadsheet with its macro system. In the 80s, it changed how many professionals manage data. Spreadsheets had similar results: a lot of slop, with confusion between data and computation, but even some good results when used with a grain of salt. Was that good or bad? It depends on who judges that, and it varies from case to case.

The point about spec is the level of detailing taken from the original work. If you write an original novel about a wild, big monkey found in a jungle, brought to New York, who escapes and so on, the King Kong author cannot claim any rights to that, sorry. If it were different, many narratives and movies would not exist today. That is inspiration, not derivation. Of course it is fair declaring inspiration, but call it with the right name.

In the past, changes in law always followed changes in technology. I see no signs of something better for the future.

If you buy a book with pictures of original creations, one can use them for training, exactly as a reader can study such portraits for their own goals, make hand copies for their own use, and so on. Like it or not, licenses and copyrights are something more specific than what it seems the idea of many people.

The key point is the possible use of non-FOSS code in training again. But all that needs to be demonstrated. Of course, IANAL, but I see very little possibility of seeing such points in a judgment.

@rpbook@gts.phillipsuk.org @sjn@chaos.social Clearly, a lot of training has been conducted in violation of third-party rights. But note that the violation, in most cases, has been recognized not for the digitalization — processing—destroying part, but for the use of a clearly pirated repository of digital content (see the Anthropic case). Like it or not, the training part is not, if not explicitly introduced as an exclusion in the license, a violation. The same for FOSS code.

@sjn@chaos.social ROTFL, if the world were in black and white, we would have lived in a perfect society for ages. Unfortunately, there is nothing that is good or bad a priori, and the future is always in the fog. If one were to base a decision on what it seems at the present time, we probably would still live in a forest. Changes are never good for all people, so the logical decision would be no changes at all.

@sjn@chaos.social Ah sure, the impact of AI on society is a much larger topic, my observation was only about simplicistic labeling of quality for human-only vs AI-aided tasking. I'm worried too for many aspects of the AI-revolution, but which are largely due to our (as a whole society) total incapacity of managing changes in a proper way, for instance in order to avoid leaving people behind.

@sjn@chaos.social Anyway, thanks for your poll; it sparked a possible blog post where I could better articulate why quality is a human-driven goal, not something intrinsically present or absent in AI-aided design. High-quality or good enough are often the choices in many fields, regardless of tools.
