Per accident today I found out about WOPI (Web Application Open Platform Interface). And why online document collaboration (Collabora / LibreOffice or OnlyOffice / also MS Office Web) is such a heavy piece of software. Even for today's standards. It's all about locking document and ensuring statefulness. For a sheet or for a document. So I setup my old Filerun server (Filerun is a nifty NextCloud alternative for small-scale adoption) and added my OnlyOffice (Docker) instance. WOPI didn't play nice. I always thought setting up "just office" was a 5 minute job. Turns out you need to get serious. Anyway, so I am running PHP software in 2026. And it works fine. Gekauft heißt nicht behalten: Wie Microsoft Office 2019 für Mac per Zertifikat entwertet Am 13. Juli 2026 ist ein digitales Zertifikat abgelaufen. Keine Sicherheitslücke, keine Schlagzeile, keine Pressekonferenz. Trotzdem hat genau dieses eine Zertifikat gereicht, um sämtlichen Mac-Nutzer*innen mit einer alten, längst bezahlten Office-Lizenz von einem Moment auf den anderen die Arbeitsfähigkeit zu entziehen. Wer noch Office 2019 für den Mac verwendet, kann seine eigenen Dateien seit diesem Tag öffnen, ansehen und ausdrucken. Bearbeiten, speichern, neu anlegen geht nicht mehr. Und Microsoft sagt selbst, dass es dafür keinen Weg zurück gibt. Ein abgelaufenes Zertifikat reicht, und deine bezahlte Office-2019-Lizenz für den Mac kann ab jetzt nur noch lesen, nicht mehr bearbeiten. Microsoft spricht offen von Lizenzkontrolle, ganz ohne Sicherheitsvorwand. Was du jetzt tun kannst, ohne dich noch fester ans Microsoft-Konto zu binden. Jag läste på OnlyOffice hemsida att de använder OOXML som sitt grundformat och blev förvånad. OOXML är alltså formatet som kommer från Microsoft och är grunden i .docx etc. Jag trodde de använde ODF (med rötter i Sun och nu är grunden i exvis LibreOffice) som grundformat, alltså det som används för .odt etc. Jag trodde att OnlyOffice var baserat på LibreOffice, men så verkar det inte vara. Eller är det? Någon som kan minska min förvirring? #OnlyOffice #LibreOffice #OOXML #ODF

#ONLYOFFICE drama is *meh* clearly, as the copyright holder they may impose whatever conditions and restrictions they desire. on the other hand, the onlyoffice vendor says that the software is licensed by AGPL, and this statement creates a certain expectation regaring the applicable licensing conditions. what will the outcome be? i guess, "it depends", and could be an interesting case to watch 🍿
