Private groups Lately, I've been seeing various people claiming that fediverse doesn't have private groups. They often point to some task force at w3c that is supposedly working to fill the gap.

However, fediverse has had private groups for a very long time:

  • Hubzilla channels. This project probably had private groups before ActivityPub. The implementation was later adapted for ActivityPub and refined in subsequent forks, Streams and Forte. It is now partially documented in FEP-171b: Conversation Containers.
  • Smithereen groups. This implementation is documented in FEP-400e: Publicly-appendable ActivityPub collections (published in 2021) and FEP-db0e: Authentication mechanism for non-public groups.
  • Lemmy communities. Private groups were proposed in Lemmy RFC 0005 and have been implemented in the development version. There is a test instance running this version (Lemmy v1.0b) at https://voyager.lemmy.ml/

There are probably other implementations that I am not aware of.

That’s some really evil shit: https://lemmy.world/post/49794261 So Tesseract (an alternative Lemmy client) downloads a blocking/filtering list from its servers, something that most people likely weren’t aware. This “feature” was introduced November last year (version 1.5.0) and is described as “Tesseract attempts to filter out as much baseline toxicity as possible” in the settings option allowing it to be disabled. The list currently contains 544 (!) individual users and 2282 (!!) regular expressions applied to user names. Among the expressions censored in user names are: Democrat, Republican, Israel, ElonMusk, trump, amerika and billionaire. There is also the regular expression usa?(.*)?terrorist which seems to be intended for the phrase “USA are a terrorist state.” The list also contains 97 censored communities and 32 regular expressions applied to community names. Finally, there are 352 (!) “forbidden” domains and 296 filtered phrases including proletariat, epstein class, Jesse Welles and “Hi, I’m an AI engineer based in Japan”. The author also disliked 👉👈 emoji. Judging by the project’s issues some people only just found out that they are being censored and are wondering why. #tesseract #lemmy

A reef isn't a single organism. Things settle where conditions suit them, and the substrate they share is what makes them a reef and not a scattering of unrelated lifeforms.

ActivityPub is that substrate. The Fediverse Beyond Mastodon series is complete. We published four posts about some of what's growing on it:

  1. The microblogging platforms that aren't Mastodon: Misskey, Pleroma, Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial. Several predate Mastodon, and some were federating before ActivityPub existed.

  2. The visual layer: Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube. Your work sits on infrastructure you or your community control, and no ranking system decides who sees it.

  3. The writing platforms: Ghost, WordPress, WriteFreely, Micro.blog, Plume, Flipboard. Each arrived at federation by a different route.

  4. Forums, books, and music: Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin, NodeBB, Bookwyrm, Bandwagon.

I will create a Lemmy community soon. It will be named "automobile", inspired by 4chan but without their culture, and with up-to-date sources and more information. I didn't have my own car before but considering many people need cars to survive, having a community like this would be very helpful. I'm living in North America, especially here I can't escape from car ownership. I will share the link here once it's done.
