This is the first time I translated “bless you”. I never knew it was something religious. In german we simply say “health” (Gesundheit) when someone sneezes.

With all the drama lately, I had many moments where I thought this can’t be good for your health. It isn’t good for mine, that’s why I didn’t engage in the threads and focused on more positive things. Most of Threadiverse development and conversation is way more positive, but the drama can paint it in a different light if you’re deep in it. PieFed has brought so much joy to so many of us and continues to do so. Thank you for all your work. I hope you can find some peace in all this.

It’s an online platform to create, share and find events (slogan from their website). I’ve used it to create a few events for concerts. Don’t know if anyone seen it or came to the events because of it, but they federated and I found my events on random funny sounding domains which was cool. It also has features for groups to organize.

Apply for NLnet Open Social Fund Before June 1

A quick reminder that NLnet has an Open Social Fund specifically for projects that implement ActivityPub. They make grants of 5000 to 50000 euros. Their next proposal deadline is June 1, 2026. The proposal process requires just a few hours of work. It’s definitely worth the time to get into this important program!

Julian Lam - Forums over Feeds: End the doomscroll

NodeBB: @julian@community.nodebb.org
Mastodon: @julian@activitypub.space

The co-founder of NodeBB, an open-source community forum platform with built-in ActivityPub support, connecting traditional forums to the social web, makes the case for bringing forums back.

Corporate feeds are optimized to keep you scrolling past what you actually came for; Fediverse feeds avoid the manipulation but still dump everything into a single unstructured stream. Forums, with their categories, persistence, and searchability, are the missing third space, and NodeBB’s ActivityPub integration lets a forum curate content from across the Fediverse by hashtag while participating in the wider social web. A pitch for municipal governments, libraries, and interest communities to claim their own digital town halls instead of shouting into someone else’s feed.

Christine Lemmer-Webber - Building a Humane Social Internet

Mastodon: @cwebber@social.coop

The co-author of the ActivityPub protocol and co-founder of Spritely Institute, building the next generation of decentralized networked technology, delivers a critique of the Fediverse from one of its co-architects.

The Fediverse’s real strength is participatory structure: any one server can fail and the network keeps running. But it isn’t decentralized enough to survive the threats coming for it, including age-verification laws rooted in anti-queer politics, hardware-level lockdown of what you can run on your own computer, and data-centre concentration that turns information infrastructure into a kill switch. The answer is to push further: content-addressed messaging, peer-to-peer chat with no host to subpoena, and technology built around joy and empowerment rather than defensive compliance.

Evan Prodromou - Introducing the Fediverse

Mastodon: @evan@cosocial.ca

The co-author of the ActivityPub protocol, research director at the Social Web Foundation, sometimes called “The Father of the Fediverse,” and author of the first-ever post on the social web in May 2008, delivers a first-principles introduction to the Fediverse.

Social networks are people and their connections. Yet the platforms that host those connections have concentrated power, stripped APIs, and optimized feeds for addiction rather than relationship. Quitting doesn’t work because Metcalfe’s Law keeps you tied to where your friends are; new monolithic alternatives can’t overcome that gravity either. ActivityPub’s answer is meaningful choice: different business models, local ownership, open APIs, and algorithms that serve you, reached by developers building, users participating, media co-publishing, and policymakers mandating interoperability.
