It's gotten to the point where a reasonably large pixel-mapped display is, to a first approximation, free. Slap one of those on top of your MCU board and you're done - no designing a custom panel, laying out LEDs, multipin connectors to run all the LEDs... and the actual usability of the things will probably tank, because then the display is "just software", and we know how excellent white goods makers are at software... #electronics #display #ApplicationSpecific #TaskSpecific #appliance #LED #hobby #chocolate #blood #DarkSide.

Meh #hobby #fotografia Zacząłem podejmować próby digitalizacji swojego nowego hobby, czyli skanowania zdjęć i całkowicie z tego rezygnuję. Zaczęło się u mnie od tego, że zacząłem szukać sobie jakiegoś znośnego aparatu z drugiej ręki (bezlusterkowca, nawet pełnej klatki), czegoś co zrobi zdjęcia lepsze niż mój Pixel, bez przesadnej ingerencji algorytmu. Nie wiem do końca jak to się stało, jaki proces zaszedł w mojej głowie, ale po wejściu w temat i rozmowie z ojcem... oddał mi swojego Zenita 12 XP z Heliosem. Stwierdziłem, że w sumie czemu nie, moja jedyna styczność z fotografią na filmie to lata dzieciństwa i tanie idiotenkamera. A ten Zenit to sprzęt niesamowity. Niedoskonały, pancerny i w stanie jak nówka. Dzisiaj też wiem, że jest o tyle niezwykły, że jest w pełni sprawny (jak na Zenita). Klekocze, trzaska, trzęsie się, dźwięk podczas robienia zdjęcia przypomina zamykanie starego kontenera. I cholera... Siadło mi to. Zdjęcia robi niedoskonałe. Przed CLA (czyszczenie, smarowanie, regulacja) to nawet połowę kadru prześwietlał. Na prawie każdym zdjęciu jest coś nie tak, to pyłek, to film zarysowany, tu nie trafiłem ze światłem, tu się zatrzęsło, tu coś poszło nie tak i film dostał trochę światła. I czasem trafi się zdjęcie, na którym wszystko zagrało. Doskonała ostrość, doskonałe światło, doskonale ujęta chwila i te jedno zdjęcie z całej rolki cieszy najbardziej. Tylko ja nie o tym. Nie tylko o tym. Te hobby dało mi trochę odpoczynku od ekranów. Zwolniłem. Miałem powód żeby wyjść gdzieś o świcie i pochodzić po dzielnicy, albo nawet dalej. Zacząłem patrzeć więcej. Paradoksem jest to, że szukając lepszych zdjęć zacząłem bardziej akceptować te najbardziej niedoskonałe. To co mnie zwiodło to skanowanie w celu udostępniania. Zacząłem te zdjęcia poprawiać, podbijać kontrast, edytować krzywe, wszystko żeby lepiej to wyglądało na ekranie. I za dużo siedziałem przy ekranie. Teraz uznałem, że te hobby zostawiam całkiem dla siebie i mojego labu foto. Fizyczne, namacalne, bez social mediów.

If for some individuals tinkering with LLM fits into that I kinda get their interest. Over the last half year small companies and hobbyist alike started blatantly sharing LLM generated images though. And it truly puzzles me: in a hobby based around physically modelling a small version of the real world, what's the point?!? Is your hobby being contaminated by #AI slop as well? #hobby #modelrailroad #LLM

This is why posting videos on YouTube will always only be a hobby for me. The amount of work put into actually making a video is insane -- recording game clips, editing and voice-over are hours of work -- and the pay off is minuscule. #youtube #youtuber #hobby

Własny serwer zamiast chmury. Nie jestem jakimś zagorzałym przeciwnikiem usług w chmurze, ale zawsze kiedy buduję coś na czyimś podwórku czuję ograniczenia. Ograniczenia prywatności, bezpieczeństwa i to że będzie drogo jeśli chcesz szybciej. Wszystko uruchamiane i przechowywane w chmurze traktuję jako publiczne. Okay, so I'm making #ElectronicMusic and as with every #hobby, there's an expense and thousands of companies vying for your hard earned cash. You can absolutely argue that #AudioPlugins are an extremely frivolous thing to buy because stock #DAW devices are so good these days and I'd agree with you, especially (for me) in the case of #Bitwig Studio 6.1. That said, they don't cover every eventuality and there is probably a plugin for exactly that. Outside of the DAW there's a massive headache waiting for anyone who has more than a small handful of plugins. I've somehow amassed about 670+ of the buggers and that *IS* ridiculous. Imagine keeping them all up-to-date manually. Yeah, that. There's a myriad of ways, branded managers and installers, direct downloads, and even manually dropping files into folders. This is a nightmare and there really hasn't been an app that attempts to at least make this problem easier to manage. Enter: #PluginHub https://www.pluginhubapp.com I caught this app on a random YouTube recommendation and saw an interview with the developer, Zach. The app seemed like a no brainer for me, so I installed it and when the demos had run, I instabought it for the very reasonable $29.99 for a two seat (!) licence. Zach offers very generous options for for studios, education, etc. The aim of the app is to catalogue your plugins and flag any that need updating and helps you get those updates done by pointing you to the sites, downloaders and managers you need to use in order to keep your stuff up-to-date. Obviously not every brand and plugin is covered here and that is one of the things Zach is actively working on with plugin companies themselves. It is basically a very neatly laid out plugin database and version comparator. Simple idea, not so simple in execution. Cat herding would be more rewarding, I'm sure! The app is new and has some minor bugs, but nothing major and nothing that makes it not useful in the extreme, day one. I chatted with Zach back and forth over email regarding a bug I was experiencing, not so much a fault of PluginHub, but a slightly botched update by a vendor's updater app itself! He is super happy to hear about bugs and issues, is very responsive and friendly to boot. He is actively working on the app for #macOS exclusively at the moment (SORRY!) but a #Windows version is in the pipeline with #Linux under consideration. KWARTZLAB PROVIDES MEMBERS ACCESS TO INVALUABLE TOOLS Hobbies can quickly become expensive, especially if it’s one that requires specialized tools like a laser cutter or full-size floor loom. But what if you did not have to buy those tools or find space in your basement for them?   That is the mission of Kwartzlab, a volunteer-led maker space located at 145 Bedford Rd. in Kitchener. Kwartzlab offers monthly memberships for $59 plus HST, which provides 24/7 access to the space’s wood, metal, textile, and pottery shops and tools.   Kwartzlab opened in 2009 inside the Boehmer Box building on Duke St., before moving to a space near Kent St. and Charles St.  Sarah Jones, Kwartzlab’s president, said the idea for the space came from a group of people who wanted to get together and build things.  “It was very much a hacker type of place, and some of those people are still members today,” Jones said.  “I used to have to tape every wooden corner because they would catch my sweater. Our metal, wood and welding shops would fit into one room here,” she said.  Kwartzlab moved the space on Bedford Rd. in 2019, and has taken over additional space since to add a textile area with looms and knitting machines. Today, it offers 9,000 square feet of space to its 230 members.   The membership base includes individuals and some small businesses. Jones said they have chosen to offer a single membership rate rather than a tier-based system.  “There’s a fundamental belief [that] we don’t want businesses to pay more and then suddenly feel like they have more privileges. We often get asked about student rates and things like that, but honestly, our rates are so much lower than any other maker space that it’s kind of hard to lower it any more,” Jones said.  In addition to memberships, Kwartzlab does offer rental spaces for members who need to store items onsite or for private workspaces.  “Membership pays for the lights on, and then studios end up paying for all the extra tools that we want to buy,” she said.  The general public can experience the Kwartzlab space at its Tuesday Open Nights, monthly mending and repair drop-ins, or at member-led workshops. At the Tuesday Open Nights, non-members can come to Kwartzlab and use general tools like sewing machines or hand drills. Specialized tools like the laser cutter or CNC machine are reserved for members.  “So, if you have something to sew and you want to just borrow a sewing machine, you could come in and do that. We’ve had in the past somebody who came in every Tuesday for two months and sewed a shirt,” Jones said.  As the space approaches its 20th anniversary and begins planning for its next chapter, Jones said accessibility is the top priority, whether that means staying on Bedford Rd. or finding somewhere new.  “That last move was chaotic. We lost members, we burned out the rest. We’re already planning ahead for how we manage it better this time,” Jones said.  Regardless of the space or the tools, Jones said what makes Kwartzlab work is the people and a willingness to try something new.  “Here it’s okay to not know everything. You can say, ‘I’ve never rewired an outlet, could somebody show me?’ And somebody will. I joke that we’re all weird around here.
