After weeks of struggling to bootstrap it, I have successfully written a configuration file for a 16-year old Lenovo Atom netbook with #Guix and deployed changes to it with the deploy utility. Lots of problems stood in the way, but cross-building packages from x86_64 to i686 gave me a lot of opportunities to learn from. I will have a blog post talking more about this in the coming days. Now, was there any major point to all this? Nope, it's purely for fun.

Tried to boot the #guix installer on my server. It hangs at establishing network connectivity. If I switch to a different vt and look at ip addresses it has both a valid v4 and v6 address... It's on a network where http requires a proxy, does it try to check internet access via http? It has no option to set a proxy in the installer? Any guix friends have suggestions?

Four GNU Guix vulnerabilities in guix substitute and guix pull allow remote privilege escalation, file overwrite, and local file disclosure. See, the inverse would have been useful for me as Jovian Experiments already exists and has deep integration such that it would probably need to be re-written in Guile Scheme for comparable functionality. *Edited. @vivekanandanks@mstdn.social Tags: #Nix #NixOS #Guix #GuixOS #Linux

@Saorsa@neondystopia.world Recently came upon guixpkgs: https://fzakaria.com/2026/06/25/guixpkgs-every-guix-package-as-a-nix-flake So step by step we are closer to convergence of both systems where one can use any and end user can migrate with just 1 or few lines in their config❤️ Since both systems are a pure functional code, I think that characteristic itself made them easily portable/bridgeable/interoperable as language agnostic system. #nix #guix #nixos #guixos #Linux

@Saorsa@neondystopia.world I aim to see one day where people can configure in the language of choice like nix or guix or anything else and choose the underlyingSystem = nix/guix and just like that it's enough to convert my whole os to guixos from nixos. Far dream, but since both systems are OS as Code, it's possible. #nix #nixos #guix #guixos #OS #linux

You CAN use other configuration languages like JSON or YAML for structuring Nix options. Though using Nix directly of course is the intended way of doing things. Suppose it would be a matter of developing a Linux distribution agnostic package manager that allowed orchestration in multiple languages. The closest you can get to that currently would be with Lisp and its many dialects. @vivekanandanks@mstdn.social Tags: #Nix #Nixos #Guix #GuixOS #OS #Linux

I'm a bit of a goober myself so I'd take what I have to say with a grain of salt. But I've recently just got into Emacs myself through GNU Guix. While I have found that here is certainly a learning curve when it comes to using Lisp. Once you get used to it, once you get used of using Lisp as a configuration language, you'll find that Emacs isn't that bad of an editor. Besides, Emacs does have evil mode which should make you feel right at home as a VIM user. @nadiyar@nadiyar.com Tags: #Vim, #Neovim, #Guix, #Emacs, #Lisp, #Freesoftware, #FLOSS, #FOSS.

Not gonna lie, the System Crafters community has made the transition from NixOS to Guix pretty seamless with their supplementary resources alongside the Guix manual itself being insanely useful for troubleshooting. I probably wouldn't have made the switch if it weren't for @daviwil@fosstodon.org and the tutorials they've built for their community. Tags: #Guix, #Emacs, #Lisp, #Freesoftware, #FLOSS, #FOSS.

Question to people related/interested in #security and #guix - did the latter supports anyhow apps sandboxing? Overall I think that sandboxing idea is quite nice (without deeper thoughts and possible implications). I’m wondering about that in context of modern approach to security and #privacy.

Yup, I'm probably going to be pulling back from Discord and probably Fluxer soon if they start enforcing age verification. Been using Guix lately, a Libre Linux distribution, so these authoritarian laws have been pushing me further into fringe free software spaces. Tags: #FOSS, #FLOSS, #FreeSoftware, #Linux, #Guix.
