@richardnosworthy@toot.wales For the Xteink specifically it varies between trivial and a pain in the nethers depending on your levels of experience, computer foo and patience. If you acquire books that are completely DRM-free* they can be moved to the SD card and put straight on to the Xteink. If you get books with DRM, for example from Kobo, then the DRM has to be stripped (using DeDRM in Calibre) and then moved on to the SD card (which can be done wirelessly). The Xteink is a niche product, unusual for it's size. If your aim is to avoid Amazon then I'd recommend a full size reader. My main #eReader is an eInk android reader - the Boox Page - which allows me to use the non-DRM Libera app, the Kobo app, and, yes, the Kindle android app. Kobo readers are easy to use, reliable and Kobo isn't Amazon! *Books without DRM are available from a variety of sources but they are rarely mainstream / current authors. Obooko, ebooks.com, eReader.com are three sources (I didn't suggest shadow libraries)

Open Book Touch looks fantastic. An #opensource #ereader with no DRM, no mandatory account, user-replaceable battery, microSD storage, hackable firmware, #openhardware . We desperately need more devices that respect users instead of locking them into ecosystems. I really hope this project succeeds https://itsfoss.com/news/open-book-touch-crowdfunding/ #openbooktouch #drmfree

My Supernote Nomad is an excellent offline e-ink note taking device. I want to have something similar for ebooks that's also privacy respecting. I wish there was a GrapheneOS device that had an eInk display, I'd use that with a FOSS eBook reader and Calibre. I like some of what Boox is putting out, but IDK how private it is. Any suggestions? #askfedi #privacy #boox #supernote #eink #grapheneos #android #ereader #calibre

@writerchristina@cupoftea.social I've just bought it too! I don't have a usable #eReader device anymore. I need to jailbreak my Amazon Kindle, which is not supported anymore, but I haven't found the time to do that yet and I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow. So, for those of you who might be interested, the #Myne app not only does provide a decent reader app for e-books, but it's also full of free books. #FediBooks #eBook

#ereader #eink
