Przed urlopem (jakoś na przełomie czerwca i lipca) kupiłem rewelacyjny produkt, który od jakiegoś czasu jest viralem na #Reddit - #czytnik #ebook'ów #Xteink X4. To mały czytniczek, który z Chin (#Aliexpress) kupiłem za jakieł 230 zł. Trzeba było na nim zmienić soft (na #Crosspoint), bo fabryczny to krzaczki, ale to dosłownie wgranie jednego pliku na kartę pamięci i restart urządzenia. Mieści mi się do nerki, kieszeni, a nawet można go przymocować do telefonu wykorzystując #MagSafe (ma wbudowany w obudowę!). Czyta w zasadzie tylko #epub, ale to mi akurat odpowiada. Jedyne wady jakie znalazłem to brak podświetlenia ekranu (spory minus przy słabym świetle) i wodoodporności (fajnie by było poczytać przy basenie i się nie martwić, że jeden niewłaściwy ruch i po nim). Zaobserowałem też delikatne blaknięcie ekranu na pełnym słońcu, ale to były ektremalne warunki - na plaży przy 35 (niekiedy nawet ponad) stopniach. Teraz wyszedł jego następca X4 Pro, który ma już podświetlenie i ogólnie jest trochę zmieniony (dotykowy ekran, inne ułożenie przycisków, większa bateria itp.). Jednakże kosztuje już 380 zł + cło i w dodatku jest wyprzedany. To już nie tak atrakcyjna cena i raczej ten nowy model się nie przyjmie, ale X4 mogę polecić jak ktoś potrzebuje mieć mały, tani czytnik zawsze przy sobie.

#Xteink is currently working on blocking firmware flashing. What a smart move. Maybe the best option to kill your success. https://www.ereadersforum.com/threads/xteink-quietly-locks-down-custom-firmware-and-the-explanation-doesnt-hold-up.13142/ The hardware is amazing, but they’ve put almost no effort into making the software even decent. The community really stepped up to fill that gap, and honestly, that’s been a huge part of the company’s success. Things are still a bit unclear as it sounds like overseas products might not be affected, but either way, this feels like a dumb move.

Both arrived! 😂 I'm trying to get Crosspoint figured out, but am having a fibromyalgia crash and my brain is not fully functional. Two thirds of the brain is tired and wants a snack, the remaining third is just fascinated by the existence of trees. Also it's one of those moments where everywhere I go the #Xteink fans are like "flashing Crosspoint is so simple and easy even your pet turtle can do it" but then when I look up how easy this is, readme.club is sending me to GitHub which is totally code for "this will be a cinch for people who write code for a living, but not for you, silly billy," so I might wait until tomorrow when I'm not so exhausted and cognitively floopy. Yes that's a real word. (Also before I do anything else I have to figure out how to get my new micro sd card in there without messing things up.)

I updated to CrossPoint 1.2 on my #XTEINK reader and my favorite feature is to turn a page into a QR code

I also figured out how to use the web updater on #Linux without relying on my dad's Windows laptop. I simply had to add my user to the uucp group! Evil Linux permissions!!! #xteink #xteinkx4

Another book completed on my #XTEINKX4! This was "To Be Taught, If Fortunate" by Becky Chambers, a fantastic #ScienceFiction novella about a group of astronauts and their journey exploring alien life on far away planets! Did I mention the X4 lately? ^^ I recently concluded that Crosspoint could benefit from a few more customizations and more font size options offered in Papyrix. It turns out that Inx might be the firmware to fill the gap. It also displays your current reading time, along with the number of pages and chapters—quite a nice feature! https://github.com/obijuankenobiii/inx Still in pre-release, so very promising. I just didn't see an option to prevent the display fading effect when the X4 is exposed to U.V. It could be activated by default or not implemented. #x4 #xteink
