@electron_greg I have tested this on a Panasonic FS-A1WSX #MSX computer, which has a software-selectable speed switch for the Z80. The results were: 53s at 3.58 MHz46s at 5.37 Mhz Edit: pictures added, the spacing in the output is amusing but I didn't care to figure out why that happens.

@valpackett @WebKitGTK It should definitely help. We have not been very actively checking out things with Freedreno (due to lack of more hands/time/hardware), but we did notice improvements on some setups where we were aware scrolling was subpar. Note that with the (also new!) async scrolling we are prioritizing responsiveness to user input, which may result in scrolling (and its animation) being applied always more promptly; but it can still happen that painting tiles cannot be done fast enough to always populate the “empty” canvas before it scrolls into the viewport. The heuristics of what to schedule for painting next depending on scroll speed, direction, etc. has not been changed, so it might still be possible to keep improving. Last thing: if you notice that the situation has not improved with Freedreno in 2.52.x, would you be so kind to send me a note about what your setup is? I can't promise to take a look *soon*, but it would be good to know, specially if it's something that can affect more Freedreno users :thaenkin:

@alerque@mastodon.social yay! At least it's still faster to build than Firefox or Chromium... But not by much. I have pinned your comment in the AUR website, by the way. Thanks for giving things a spin!

@alerque@mastodon.social it does build in a chroot, I try to always use paru with the build chroot support to make sure packages build cleanly :blobwink: Thank you very much for the offer, much appreciated. So far there hasn't been much asking about prebuilt packages—we can leave it be for now.

@swags@social.treehouse.systems yeah, swap can help. Of course it makes the build take longer, but it's workable in a pinch.

Please note that building this is not for the faint of the heart: You will need ideally at least 16 GiB of memory (in this economy!) although it *might* be enough with 8 GiB (unlikely), and as many CPU cores as you can throw at it. My old laptop with an Intel 2-core/4-thread 2.6 GHz CPU and 20 GiB of memory takes about five hours to complete the job. I do this for myself and I do not intend to provide a repository with binaries myself. Sorry about that.

For those @archlinux@fosstodon.org users who may want to test the @WebKitGTK@floss.social release candidate versions leading to 2.52.0 (due in March), typically I keep the following #AUR package updated between the first .90 RC and the first stable .0: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/webkitgtk-6.0-devel

Do not use it for anything too critical, it may crash, be unreliable, or eat your firstborn kitten. But if you do try it, and find issues, please report them at https://bugs.webkit.org :neocat_bottom:

@osnews@mstdn.social that is GNOME Web, indeed! We recently got a few patches contributed to upstream @WebKitGTK@floss.social that make it work on QNX. For example https://github.com/WebKit/WebKit/pull/54920 is not even that big, which makes me think the POSIX/Linux API compatibility must be pretty good these days.

@harrysintonen@infosec.exchange very nice writeup, this reads like a post from https://www.tumblr.com/accidentallyquadratic — too bad it hasn't received updates since 2019, because surely there's more issues lurking in the corners of many software projects.

@pcy@icosahedron.website @evilpaul_atebit@icosahedron.website I think at least YLE's own productions typically are not geoblocked—because they own the rights and can decide what to do. The same is true for RTVE, the Spanish national TV and radio company.

@stefan@social.lol ouch, that sucks big time, so sorry that the situation went bad so quickly! Anyhoo, while I don't know how likely the positions would appeal to ex-Bandcamp folks, we have a few openings, but at the moment we are actively looking for people who would fit in our WebKit team, so sharing just in case: https://www.igalia.com/jobs/open/ — we are a remote friendly, worker owned coop, working on FLOSS technologies at many levels of the software stack.

@downey@floss.social there was at some point a proposal to completely remove User-Agent strings from HTTP requests, but it was planned after UA Client Hints would ship... Which is kind of the same crap, but structured, so easier to fingerprint and abuse. Now guess which entity with monopolistic practices made the proposal. A lawful good proposal would be to freeze UA strings, without putting the information elsewhere.
