@pcy@icosahedron.website Interesting.. thanks. They wouldn't even have to do *much* analysis for it to be useful. Given the scale at which they operate, even "brand X was mentioned 10% more today in chats in small geographic region Y" would be incredibly valuable information to the right (or wrong.. I guess) people.

There's an article on the BBC about WhatsApp rolling out usernames and it includes the quote: "WhatsApp does not use the content of private chats for advertising. Those are protected by end-to-end-encryption, meaning the firm cannot read the contents of messages." I see this language used a lot. So.. am I being dumb.. or is this a little white lie? Sure, end-to-end encryption means that Meta (or whoever) can't read messages in flight or at rest on their servers, but.. everyone in a chat's messages are clearly unencrypted in your devices memory at least partially at some point. Now, Meta would be stupid to give the game away by directly targeting ads at you based on your chats, or to send that data to their servers through a side channel (and no doubt some infosec people would have spotted that) but.. I mean.. they can still analyse the chats on the device, right? So.. am I stupid, or is this quote misguided/misleading? WhatsApp is "free"... so we are the product after all.

Dell desktop computer. i7/8GB/discrete GPU. I'll rip the HD out but otherwise it's got everything you need. It's over 10 years old but it'll be good for a spare home server or maybe someone you know would benefit from a "my first Linux" project ;)

Sony Hi-Fi. Haven't tested thoroughly but the CD player at least works and I'll admit I was surprised that it sounds pretty good.

I'm in Dorchester, UK (probably until next week). If you can pick up, it's yours - these things really should not go to the rubbish tip, and I'm not sure the charity shops are gonna be that bothered. DM me if you're interested.

All my cool friends have posted pictures of their hotel rooms that have HTTP status codes, but I’ve never been as lucky - I’ve never stayed in a room with a meaningful number. Until yesterday that is! And now.. er… ok, yeah, that’s just great 🙈

@breaque For hosting.. of course it depends what you're after and what an arm and a leg is worth on the current market. S3 is the obvious starting point for static hosting and is cheap as chips (but costs your soul), so then I always recommend https://uberspace.de/en/

@mrsbeanbag ESLint is still (AFAIK) heavily used by JS/TS projects and it's mature and it's pretty damn good. I expect a lot of projects are probably even using it without really realising. Hmmm... I wonder where the LLMs got their rules from? 🤔

There's a *really* good documentary about the Finnish gaming industry on YLE (Finland's equivalent of BBC) and you can watch it online at YLE Areena. Of course it talks *a lot* about the demoscene :)

The doc is part of a larger series. It's in Finnish, but they just added English subtitles to this one episode. Neat, huh?
