computer witch in a professional software/linux/embedded engineer's clothing - anti-vibecoder - i live in maryland and bend old computers to my will - polyamorous, vaguely relationship anarchist, very gay - sometimes i make music as 'ersatz waterfall' - not a tech-only account, i'm just a computer addict - Intel 80286 enthusiast, and also PowerPC and MIPS and RISC-V - i have either too many or not enough ESP32s
---
if you have recently used the world wide web, connected to a 5g cell network, or gotten an ultrasound at a hospital, there's a chance something i worked on helped. i currently do energy monitoring tech
---
i am an operating systems nerd. i regularly use Gentoo, FreeBSD, and NetBSD on desktop, NetBSD/Alpine on server, Debian when those fail me, and sometimes Haiku, and many old operating systems, including IRIX and Novell NetWare.
---
there exist no conversations without politics
consumerism is destructive
control your technology, don't let it control you
---
this is not a mastodon account. if you are using mastodon, i highly recommend trying alternatives. a diverse ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem
---
i make an effort to put alt text on all my image posts, but alt text seems to break sometimes on misskey.
---
follow requests invoke a vibe check. if you're cool i'll probably accept. unless i already follow you, then they're automatically accepted. if you're cool and you didn't get accepted, dm me, it may have just gotten lost

@techokami@woof.tech @kirby@freerobuxextremist.com you can run steam on freebsd with plasma6 wayland, using only tools that you can install directly from the package manager, without having to build anything from source. doing it properly does mean writing and running a script to launch it, but you can cut corners and not do that. and you can run steam games this way using native (not emulated-linux) wine/proton, with proprietary nvidia drivers officially released by nvidia, on a dual-graphics laptop from this side of the decade boundary. the open source graphics drivers are derived from linux. getting graphics drivers set up is not trivial, but once you're done it generally does just work, and it is all in the package manager. you can use fusefs-lkl to load linux btrfs as a fuse library and mount your btrfs filesystems, but i'd recommend if possible using zfs for things shared between linux and freebsd instead. can't speak on ntfs. see this thread from a while back with some screenshots of me running steam RE: https://nya.social/notes/819af22734a0975283376d99

@nyquildotorg@gts.nyquil.org my upstream OS vendor turns this telemetry off by default. firefox therefore says it is being "managed by my organization" in its settings page, because of the file they installed to override this. nobody who runs any number of different Linux distributions is counted in these numbers. this includes all 3 members of my household, about 10 machines. it probably includes multiple of my coworkers.

computer witch in a professional software/linux/embedded engineer's clothing - anti-vibecoder - i live in maryland and bend old computers to my will - polyamorous, vaguely relationship anarchist, very gay - sometimes i make music as 'ersatz waterfall' - not a tech-only account, i'm just a computer addict - Intel 80286 enthusiast, and also PowerPC and MIPS and RISC-V - i have either too many or not enough ESP32s --- if you have recently used the world wide web, connected to a 5g cell network, or gotten an ultrasound at a hospital, there's a chance something i worked on helped. i currently do energy monitoring tech --- i am an operating systems nerd. i regularly use Gentoo, FreeBSD, and NetBSD on desktop, NetBSD/Alpine on server, Debian when those fail me, and sometimes Haiku, and many old operating systems, including IRIX and Novell NetWare. --- there exist no conversations without politics consumerism is destructive control your technology, don't let it control you --- this is not a mastodon account. if you are using mastodon, i highly recommend trying alternatives. a diverse ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem --- i make an effort to put alt text on all my image posts, but alt text seems to break sometimes on misskey. --- follow requests invoke a vibe check. if you're cool i'll probably accept. unless i already follow you, then they're automatically accepted. if you're cool and you didn't get accepted, dm me, it may have just gotten lost

today in things you may not have known:

during quake's 10 year anniversary, john romero released the sources to all of the original quake maps, singleplayer and multiplayer, under the GPLv2.

the textures and models are still proprietary, of course, but the maps themselves are free for the world to use

emailed my congressperson about H.R. 8250, the federal age verification bill, and all the reasons why any such bill is a bad idea, and told him that if it passes they might as well arrest me now because from that point on part my life's work becomes, by necessity, actively avoiding complying with it or using any device complying with it, and assisting anyone else who asks in doing the same

if you're reading this and in the US, you should also call/email your congressperson and complain at them. you don't have to be eloquent or waste their time like with companies, just tell them how you feel and what you want from them. part of their literal actual job is to listen to you

all anthropic employees should be banned by default from all open source software projects, in light of the fact that apparently claude code has an "undercover mode" for their internal use, to be used when contributing to public repositories, that instructs the model not to indicate that it is an ai model or attribute commits to itself and instead pretend to be a normal human (and also not leak internal codenames)

current US copyright guidance requires that ai-generated output is adequately indicated as such in order to not jeopardize copyrightability of potentially the entire work (such as, for example, an open source codebase)

i find it very interesting that llama.cpp, a project presumably maintained and contributed to primarily by people who generally have a decent understanding of LLMs, has a strict policy against predominantly LLM-generated contributions, bans accounts who violate it, uses an AGENTS.md that tries to rope the agent into enforcing this and warning the user, and they have also discussed adding canaries to catch people lying about AI use and not sufficiently reviewing its output

@Daojoan@mastodon.social there was a time when extensive knowledge of things was something only easily attainable to the elites. that time is now past, yet we still have not shaken ourselves of the patterns we collectively learned to recognize. this benefits the new elites, and so they perpetuate it. i hope we can learn from this soon.

@mirabilos@toot.mirbsd.org yeah. in this case i think it primarily raises concerns for future contributions. one wonders if a judge might, if reviewing this, rule that all contributions after this commit are public domain, unless the provenance of the code is very clear, e.g. patchsets taken from other projects which do practice due diligence
