@coolandnormal@aus.social I think in general regardless of any views on AI itself this situation is absurd, unfair, and overall demonstrates just about everything wrong with universities as they have become today.
We care so much about "cheating" things that should only be there to help guide better student learning and reflect their progress (despite not letting students improve themselves afterwards and reflect that improvement, thus making it a punishment). We overload students with more work than they could possibly reasonably accomplish while partaking in all the other activities that schools have to offer. We teach students based solely on accreditations made up by someone somewhere else and often omit both necessary job knowledge and focus too much on job training instead of overall education. And then we punish students for trying to grasp at any tools they might find to try and escape this. After having pushed them there in the first place.
The business model of sites like Chegg are entirely reliant on this and now AI companies are profiting off the same disparities. I found that the more advanced your topics were the more likely you were to have weird homework questions that no tutor could assist with. What tools does a stuck student even have anymore at that point?

You should be fucking banned from calling something smart glasses if they're just glasses with a camera and Bluetooth headphones slapped on. we've had those for ages they're not "smart" they just used to be called "spy cameras" strange that they didn't go with that for the marketing.
I'll give you ones with screens being more actually interesting but we had that chance with Google Glass and the world decided "camera on glasses bad" and they gave up, strangely "camera on glasses bad" is now a controversial thing to express in public! Also I won't forgive them for not making the glass prerelease units hackable

It was also entirely based on an analog processing chain and C at least was fairly complex at least from what I remember from our last research on it

@mntmn@mastodon.social the holy grail imo besides a quality mechanism that can be fabricated by CNCs would be getting modern DSP to reproduce Dolby A/B/C. That noise processing made tapes tolerable and nothing being made now includes them since the chips stopped getting made and were always proprietary

We're also still not sure how to layout the apartment, combined kitchen/living rooms still baffle us. It's not a tiny place but it's always hard to figure out fitting the lab area and justifying spending on setting up a living room area

@tholindeth@wizzzard.online it's a bit of a shame Wolfram kind of embraced LLMs but then again his takes on them are some of the most nuanced I've seen (he's a weird dude and his takes are appropriately abstract and weird in a distinctly different way from the rationalist AI-booster way).

And it truly is remarkable writing. I think that goes regardless of your views on LLMs. The allegorical story of Lyle, doing a somewhat repetitive task, not getting projects of the ground or to the finish line, focused more on doing the thing rather than the "product" deeply relates to us as I'm sure it does to many. The guilt also of a life of unfinished projects with nobody to see them strikes at us constantly.
I don't think the author's position on models differs too much from our own either. There are tasks like looking up small snippets or examples that are — for better or for worse — executed better through many models. As long as you verify these you're not fundamentally sabotaging your ability to think.
I also think a lot has to be said for our position on the cost externalities. These current models, even open weight ones which do not fundamentally compare, will never run on consumer hardware. I will never be able to own this tool and quite frankly I am not interested in returning to the era of timesharing for everything I want to do.
I do think the writing is appropriately harsh at people who have fundamentally incompatible core beliefs on LLM usage and its acceptability and I regret that this may potentially tear about friendships that didn't have reason to explore that difference of beliefs before and may not have even had insight into it.
